New to feeding big fish. A little advice please?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was going to say way to much frozen food as well. That is normally a one time a week thing. Best to get them on a good pellet. I feed Hikari food. For me the cost per ease of getting said food, and if my fish will actually eat it all factor into it. I tried NLS a real good food, but she would not eat it. But strait up attacks Hikari food, and I can get it local so win win I guess.

I feed my smaller fish once a day and every other day for my larger fish. However I feed my Rainbow Darters twice daily they have a very high metabolism Mysis Shrimp and Bloodworms are their staple.

Thanks for all the input! I'll cut back to once a day (flakes and pellets,) frozen stuff 1x/week, and one fast day. Maybe I'll get a container of NLS and Hikari and offer a bit of both - lol! They both seem good and have slightly different benefits... The JD is just going to have to deal. I swear he gave me a dirty look today when he didn't get his bloodworms! I was also excited to discover the fine art of sprinkling the pellets a few at a time so the fish grab them before they hit the bottom (I've been dumping them in there all at once.) Should I feed the vampire pleco anything after dark? (If so, how often?)

I just hand feed everybody, this allows me to make sure everyone eats.

As for the pellets vs whole food debate it's pointless to debate this, as long as your fish get all their nutritional needs it doesn't matter.

It will be fine to drop a water in after lights out.
