New to forum fire eel question

ok, hummm another thing u could try is market shrimp i feed it to both my 14 inch fire eel, TT eel and rays. They about 20 - 25 bucks in market shrimp a week which isn't bad. Also when we bought the rays we picked up a bar fridge and turned it into a "worm" fridge so we can buy flats of worms at the bait shops. The cost of those worms are about 45 for 500 dewies and they stored in a 5 g bucket in the fridge so they last longer just gotta remember to feed them. We also have a red worm colony started its a composter dose not stink at all and is stored in storage but it takes a wile to get up and running. Also pls be aware ur wife will be happy to know she doesn't need to squeeze poop out of the worms, just rinse off and there g2g, been doing it that way for over 5 years.

Shrimp are a good treat imo but tbh as a staple worms are much better. shrimp are high in cholesterol, most you find are SW now FW so their entire make-up is different on a protien/fat ect level. I never had "bad" growth when i fed a mostly shrimp diet but i did have "fat" eels. also iodine levels.. and some are preservative filled ( really bad, a few members have lost fish feeding this as a staple and had unexplained deaths. one of the reasons I stepped back from feeding so much shrimp.) On that note if you have access to a fresh fish market and can get it this way it is much better, but i still would nto make it more then 50% of their diet. personally i just don't think feeding any animal a staple diet thats different then what they have in the wild is long term healthy for them. imo FW shrimp, crayfish, invertibrates are the best foods for spineys. This is what they eat in the wild along with live fish as they get larger, fire eels seeming to be the exception as its rare for them to eat live fish.

Thanks for all the input.I think I will just continue what I am doing now. They seem to be doing very well,I think shrimp,or some other sea food as treat from time to time. Also I was wondering if your eels go through phases ,my eels have PVC pipe and a terracotta chimney liner.Somtimes they come out right to surface to eat from my hand, sometimes even stick face out of water as if to see what is taking me so long to get the next worm.Other times I have to bring food near the end of pipe.Seems to last like a month and then back the other way.Sometimes I can understand something changed in tank.,or lots of noise renovations in progress.Other times I just can not figure them out.Anyone else eels act like this?

Unfortunately I can't help you with this. You are a great fish keeper I must say! Post some pics of your eels and other fish. I would love to see them! Best of luck!

Every now and then all of mine will go on a food strike and just chill out.. no clue why.. I suspect its something seasonal ect.. because its not just usually one or 2 of my eels.. but all of them. and the tanks are spread out abit. Usually they do this in the winter the most.

The first pic is pretty recent. The rest rest are pretty old. If I can find my camera in this renovation hell, and they will cooperate I will try to get some new ones soon. Thanks again for your replies.
