A 75 gallon tank is a good size to start with. It gives you a length of four feet, and a width of eighteen inches, which will accommodate many different fish. If you want a "Pet" fish, get an oscar. Even if you have to buy him small, he'll grow so fast that it will be fun to watch. I do not advise using feeder fish, but he'll like worms and such, so if that's what you're into, you'll still get to watch things die. Hikari makes some good pellets which are excellent staples for cichlids. Make sure you get a strong, strong filter, as Oscars are messy. Please keep in mind that this does not allow you much, if any, room to stock extra, because you already don't want to do much work. You could probably be okay with just one Oscar, a good-sized canister filter, and weekly water changes/gravel siphoning. Overall, I'd say that you need to research more into aquarium maintenance, and, of course, the nitrogen cycle if you're not familiar with it. Also, just check out some of the prices on some canister filters in your area; often, "exciting" (i.e. predatory) fish require a lot of filtration, and it can get costly. Members of MFK (including myself) often have a seven or eight hundred dollars' worth of filtration under a tank! Just keep reading and researching and come back to us if you have any more specific questions. However, I do think an Oscar is your best bet. Head on over to the Oscar forum and listen to people talk about how personable, funny, etc., their Oscars are... I think you'll agree.
