If money is tight, look on Craigslist for tanks and filters. 20,30,55,and 75 gallon tanks and filters are almost always there. I would start by researching fish.Exodons would work in a 20 or 30 gallon.A Green Terror would work in a 55.And a Oscar would work in a 75. All of these are nice looking fish with attitudes. The Green Terror and Oscar would be more like a pet. They will greet you at the front of the tank, and beg to be fed. Neither one of them needs to be fed feeder fish though. In fact, feeding them live fish could do them more harm than good. If you want to see them eat live food, worms and crickets are the way to go.
Agreed.

I also suggest

Bichirs some of the smaller species for a 75 or less
Jack Dempseys 55-75 gallon
Red devil for a 125

As far as the maintenance goes. Were looking for something that basically wont die If we over feed it or under feed it. Also something that does not have to be fed at the same time daily because we all have class at different times different days. The water will be changed often, it's more of an issue if we mistakenly over feed or under feed them/it on occasion. Also it will be in the living room and see a lot of people so it has to be shock resilient . Were only planning on getting one type of fish as well in the tank. It just has to be a pretty cool fish that not everyone has. :) Thanks for all the great replies so far. Keep them coming. Will be browsing craigslist now.;)

Well, underfeeding is no problem, but overfeeding can foul the water and throw your water parameters out of whack, causing your fish to become ill. So, there would need to be a feeding schedule to ensure that overfeeding (at least, not everyone feeding every day!) didn't occur. Oscars aren't skittish fish, and would do well in a high-traffic area such as a living room. Also, he won't care what time it is -- they're always hungry. The same would go for some of the other posters' suggestions.

Yeah, your gonna need some kind of feeding schedule. How many of you are living in this place?Whatever you end up with,it won't really need to be feed more than once a day.
Just be careful. One tank can lead to 1 more, and then another, and then another.............:nilly:

you can get an oscar. u can train them to jump for food. they r pretty fun to watch when you feed them feeders. but if you want something more exciting...get a peacock bass but be ready to get a bigger tank in the future.

Don't feed feeders. If you have any doubts on this, research. You're obviously trying to figure out how to keep a healthy fish. Feeders are not part of the equation.

It only takes one sick feeder to make your fish sick (and possibly the whole tank). It's really not worth it with Oscars, who will eat whatever you give them. They don't need feeders.
