new to frontosa... please help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the swelling seams to have gone down, but the sore looks to have grown, it looks like his scales are rotting or being scraped off. should i add some aquarium salt, and up the temp? or could this be something more then an injury?

theres always a possibility it could be more then an injury.. is your water soft or hard... fronts like hard water.. yes add some aquarium salt as per directions per gallons.. always helps .. it sooths and relieves stress... and even fights any infection that may be lingering or starting to take hold.. it is not an antibiotic but it has healing attributes... the temp can be normal or just a bit warmer.. are you sure he did not burn himself on the heater... sometimes if heater is not coverered this can happen..

All I can say is tetracyline is probably the strongest infection fighter you will be able to get from petco and treats inside and outside bacterial infections. Honestly I dont even know if they carry it, I just know petsmart does so I would think they would. Salt is helpful. However I dont generally advise the use of a medication without knowing what the fish has, as it may or may not help depending on what it has. Metro is something a bit more specialized than what a large chain would sell (at least in my area) I have only found it at one lfs, a larger aquarium supplier (not like a lfs, but it is local) and the vet (I got a prescription under my dogs name after explaining the issue of my fish to the vet... they may ask you to bring the fish in....). Clout I dont know where you get, I never used it, I am sure you can search for it on petco website if that is all that you have access to.

Liz brought a good point it could have burnt itself on the heater... (i've had it happen before) or injured itself some other way

large red/sore spots could be from any number of things such as injuries to swim bladder infections.

If the fish gets worse you dont want to wait so long to treat the fish that you lose it. You need to be prepared that with or without treatment this may happen.

its not red, the sore isn't red, maybe a mild pink, it just looks like the scales are being removed. the heater is floating, not pinned down, but kinda sticking out, on the opposite side of the tank from where he stays. i have noticed he has been more active, but at the upper level of the tank, and the aggression from the other one is keeping him up there. i have not fed, and have not done a water change yet, incase the salt i have in already is still effective, if not then i can add more. thats the only thing i can do as of now.

sad day, i woke up this morning and he was breathing, but it almost looked like the other front had him backed into the corner of the tank, i thought if i kept the light off, they would be ok together. well apparently not. i woke up at 11, to find the poor fella dead. im not too happy about that, but im going to do the only thing i can... take him back for a refund. the other guy is doing flawlessly!

sorry about that.. did not want to hear bad news.. good luck on your next purchase.. hope they replace him with another front.. glad the other guy is doing good.. sometimes you get one that is already sick.. it may have passed no matter what.

yea, i wish i could have treated it better, instead of salt and temp... but i live in wyoming, whenever you need something here, you can't find it.
