new to gars but need more info

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks for the info I really appreciate it I will post pics on here once I get him.its a good deal as I get a few 10G feeder tanks to go with it. I will be going to pick it all up on wednesday

as long as the gar isn't going into that tank in your avatar you should be set for a while..good luck!

that tank was turned into a sump it was a 50G and is one of the filters on the 250G tank. I like the pic though because of all the colors. those fish where rescues and all of them are still alive and are in my other tanks. most in the 150G the paroon is in the 250G and I guess will have to move back to the 150 when the Gar arrives. my long term plans are to build a 1500G but not until next year. I want to build a smaller tank first so I can work out the kinks.

yeah its a gator I've I.D.ed it. I have found a ton of info on fishing for them but not on raising them. I hate to see a fish live in cramped quarters and at least I can offer it some reprieve. maybe not long term but at least for a while. and post something for someone who may be able to handle it thoughout its life. as much as I would love to have a true monster for life its not in the cards right now and my tank build is still in planning stages and would likely be around 1500-2000G still a far cry from big enough for these in the wild. besides I'm not sure I want a fish in my house that could one day eat me lol I see this as a rescue for the short term not a lifetime arrangement.

you should not rescue just because it was in bad condition and you felt pity for it. it will just give more reason for the bad guys to catch more gars or get more stock causing more gars to suffer.

how is rescueing a fish from someone supporting the bad guys? would you rather have the fish die? I see it as SOMEONE HAS LEARNED TO DO THEIR HOMEWORK NEXT TIME. letting a creature of any kind die because someone didn't do their homework then this hobby wouldn't exist. when I first started keeping fish I lost alot of fish and I got frusterated. I trusted the LFS to tell me when something wouldn't work and do to the nature of the business was always told yes it would. most people still believe that a fish will not outgrow its tank. if anyone believes this then they have no problem putting an Alligator Gar or an Osker in a 10G tank. people need to be taught the truth and then once they learn to do their homework they will be alot more successful in the long run. IMO bad fish keepers are what keep the LFS in business

It does support the bad guys it makes them get more stocks to be given to other ignorant owners.

would you rather have the fish die?

yes. It would save more individuals.

True, but you could lessen the deaths by buying less animals that you don't know how to care.

when I first started keeping fish I lost alot of fish and I got frustrated. I trusted the LFS to tell me when something wouldn't work and do to the nature of the business was always told yes it would.

You could always use the internet to research.

True. But also over compassionate people keep the evil LFS in business by buying more of their products.

I got the fish and I got him home. I got some more free stuff to with it so I was happy. in the deal I got the Alligator Gar he's actually 21" long and a Common Pleco that is about 14" long (I didn't measure him) but along with that I got about 100 feeders, a 20G Long, a 100W heater, air pump, AC70 filter 20Lb gravel substrate, 2 rubbermaid totes and a full bag of pellets all for $20 I figured I did ok. I will post pictures of him tomorrow my batterys are dead in the camera so their charging. I had to move my other Pleco and the Paroons to the 150G the 2 smaller Blood parrots to the 50G the Rope fish to the 30G and I am cycling the new 20G so I can put it to work. he is a beautiful fish in my mind. the water they where keeping him in was at 85 so a bit warmer than it should be but not to bad to acclimate as the tank was at 82 originally but I will be lowering it to about 70 slowly about 1 degree a day what would you suggest as a water temp? I don't want to go to far or to fast.
