Hello,

I've been creating species tanks for most of the time being in this hobby and have honestly gotten bored of it. I have kept large species of fish before (south american cichlids and large puffers) but I was intrigued by a few species and am currently looking into creating a community tank with them, species are as follows:

~Bagarius bagarius (devil catfish)
~Brachyplatystoma jurunese (Jurunese Shovelnose Catfish)
~Polyepturus (the species overall)

I was looking into getting a single devil cat after reading that they are an aggressive catfish that reaches only a max of 8 inches (according to fish base and planetcatfish) and a single jurunese shovelnose cat due to it being a pretty large catfish though it is smallest of its family (reaching up to 2 feet, according to planetcatfish.) Along with that I was looking into the polyepturus and saw many at the LFS I work at and was amazed by their characteristics.

Well let me cut to the chase, according to the stats on the species mentioned I've been looking into raising those species (from juveniles) in a 55 gallon tank (1 devil cat, 1 jurunese, and 2 polyepturus [probably the palmas,]) Just wondered if that would be ok. I do realize that these species need space so I know that I will need a larger tank to accomodate them, but at the moment I am looking to house them in a 55 till I can break down a few of my species tanks to make room.

Tips on the species or any comments or suggestions would be great!

Thanks!

Devil cats eat everything

:welcome:

Devil cat fish are bad ass looking.. I saw a couple of them today, tiny about 1.5 inches

I've read that cats and bottom dwellers in general can get really territorial and aggressive with other bottom dwellers as they get larger, personally I have had a 15" and a 17+ inch pleco in a 55 gal and they did fine together. interestingly enough they were bought together from the same shipment and the only difference between the two was the larger one learned to come to the surface and would trap pellets against the glass and Chew on them til they dissolved enough for him to swallow them. Only a couple inches longer but probably half again as massive.

Uhh, everything as in all its tank mates? Or everything as in what it can fit in its mouth?

I was hoping to pick up the juruense tomorrow so I can get the best 1 of the 3 aswell as the palmas's.

Still would like to hear from someone if its a good combination or not...

Thanks for all the input, and thanks for the welcoming FHS!

P.S. I'm looking on installing atleast a 110 (within a wall) for these guys as adults, I hope to have the following in the end:

~Polyepterus Palmas (x2)
~Juruense Cat (x1)
~Devil Cat (x1)
~Clown Loaches (x3) <this is probably not good>
~Suitable mid level fish if i can find any <NOOOO CICHLIDS OR AROWANAS!>

Sorry bro...taht isn't gonna work. The devil cat likes cooler waters, as in 65 to 75 MAX, lots of current and oxygen. The jur. is gonna need warmer temps, at least 80 degrees. I think you are jippin yourself by not gettin any cichlids but aight. Have you looked into dats? That would be a great combo...wide bar or thin bar are both great looking. Welcome!!

I've had bad experinces with Dats but really love catfish and polys'. Just saw a few species I would like to keep together but I guess the devil cat is outa the question. Would it be possible to just keep all the species at 78? With shady spots with circulation?

Just out of curiosity, what could I keep with a devil cat if one were to be housed in another tank (not with the juruense) or would one be ok with a pair of polys'?

Thankz

Devil cats are cold water...not much can be kept with them for that reason. :( Plus they are aggressive. Either do a solo tank or more Bagarius bro....:(
You could try ATF.... Wes from RareFish in the buy sell has some for sale right now...;)
