New to MFK and would love your advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with Milpool if your only running one FX5 on your tank and your going to add more fish your going to need another one. I have a 150 pretty heavily stocked and I'm running 2 FX5's and there doing a pretty good job. If your looking to buy another one I suggest getting one off ebay. I got both mine off there brand new for 150 a piece.

Good morning! Yesterday I was asking questions for ideas regarding my 200g and you mentioned a few that I am considering. I am going to be rehoming my tsn and was able to cancel the p'bass order (thank goodness!). So my question now is there is a jumbo bgk available near me - about a 12". I am getting two veil tail oscars and a severum. How would this list do together? (heard that Oscars should "never" be paired with a bgk. Is that correct??)

2 Pair of VT Oscars
1 Severum (maybe a 2nd)
1 Ornate Bichir
1 BGK

Also, would these also work with this combination?
1 Jack Dempsey
1 Firemouth
1 Venezuelan Eartheater

IME and Opinion BGK's and Oscars are fine together, has not been any issue for me. I personally think you could do All those fish. Only issue may be the Jack, since there is not other fish of equal size and temperament he may pick on others (firemouth, severum and oscars((untill they get real big))) I would suggest either dropping the jack (last resort because they are awesome), adding some dither fish or 2 other fish that can duke it out with the jack. and up your filtration.

Not to insult your intelligence, but are you sure it is a tiger shovelnose and not a lima shovelnose? If it was a lima then it would be fine to keep in there and it would look cool also. No offense just would think a 4 year old tsn would grow to the width of the tank even if it was stunted. Apologies if I am wrong.

I'm not sure how to attach a picture, but catman, definitely tiger shovelnose. Looks quite like your avatar pic, actually.

Eatingleg4peanut: I found a nice parrot I could add to this mix that I am looking at. What are some good dither fish? I looked in your earlier posting. This store with the parrot also has 2 lg. silver dollars right now about 8" each. She is worried that a JD would attack and maybe kill them?? Any JD I would get right now would probably have to start in a grow-out tank and then be added a little later.

And yes, if I find it necessary to add another FX5, I would not hestitate to do that once I see that it is needed.

2 SD's wont do, but 5+ will, jack will/may go after them but since there should me several it will not be the same one twice so minimal damage will happen. Also I have found after awhile (a few weeks) of chasing dithers, Jack's learn that they are just big dumb fish that pose no threat and let them be. If you view my tank setup in my profile, you will see I keep almost all the fish you have mentioned.

lol, I been in need of doing that for awhile, it just never seems to happen since I'm only online while at work and when I get home its a whole other world. I will eventually, gotta get a new camera too, old one walked away.
