For fish, No
For keeping Co2 dissolved in the water, Yes

so i should get rid of the o2 if i have the co2

Man, you don't take gentle nudges, do you?

If you're dead set on DIY CO2, then you need to get a CO2 drop checker. It's a very cheap and efficient way of testing CO2 levels in your tank (you shouldn't dose anything you can't test for). That way you can see when it's time to change your bottles, if you need to add more bottles, or if you need to start aerating at night.

Here's an excellent thread how they work, how to make the solutions yourself and some cheap DIY versions: http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/...aquarium-projects/32100-diy-drop-checker.html

Good luck and keep us posted.
