New to Polypterus - Substrate Advice!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
out of curiosity, does anyone know if wc polypterus are more likely to breed than cb? Was thinking today that I now have 2 delhezi and I'm pretty sure one is male and the other is female, and it would be pretty cool to try to breed them down the road so I got to thinking about the advantages of wc vs cb breeding. I assume that the quality of the offspring would be higher if their parents were wc. But I don't know if wc are more likely to breed because they're wc, or if the shock of going from the wild to captivity might make them less likely to breed.

Anyone have any info?

All of my poly are about to be moved to a new tank that has a 4'x2' footprint, want to use the original floramax as a substrate but don't know how much I need. I know there are formulas to figure out how much sand/gravel you need, but floramax seems like it probably has a different consistency. Anyone have an idea of how many 15-lb bags I'll need? or maybe how big the 15-lb bag is compared to a typical 50lb bag of sand?

Google it i forgot which website has the sand calculator. Will come up on the first hit. I dont know how accrurate it is but should be a decent ball park figure

In my opinion, 1lb per gallon typically will give you a 1 inch inch bed. 2pounds/gallon 2" inch bed. Start with 1lb/gallon and go from there. For plants, it doesn't hurt to have more. size of a 15lb bag is about 12inches by 13inches and maybe like 1 inch thick(about the size of a textbook). However, not too familiar with the original Flora Max. Could be slightly off with my dimensions. ;)
