New to Rope Fish - help on set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey everyone, thought I would give an update on how the new tank is going. It was a lot of work for that first week lol the sand is working out great and all the fish love it. Heater is working great and you guys were right, Beamer is out and active far more now! She also now comes to me magpie magpie :) she still won't take food from me but will wrap herself around my fingers like she's hugging me, she is so soft!

Espy, my terror of a bn pleco has calmed down a lot and no longer bothers the piggies, the bigger tank really did good for her.

I did add a few more fish because all of mine were bottom dwellers and it looked very empty lol so I got some very colorful sunset fire platies and a beautiful chocolate pompon gold fish with orange poms. All of them get along famously. The gold fish is named Boombah, you know, rah rah rah, sis boom bah lol she is a very active girl and I will frequently find her and Beamer swimming together. Beamer just loves the goldfish. I also added 2 delphax corys with my blue mottled ones. All the piggies are best friends.

And yes, I still have all the shrimp lol my water levels are perfect, tank is always clean. The piggies and boombah keep the sand sifted very well. Between the fish and the 120gal filtration, I have a well oiled machine lol I've never had a tank with such a mixed community and such peaceful harmony. They all get along, swim together, eat together, sleep together etc. I feel like I have perfection <3
This is so wonderful to hear. Glad you have a great community going and that the fish all seem happy with the new tank. That's so neat that Beamer is so friendly! Such great names for the new fish too! Looking forward to seeing more pics and am excited for you and your new tank :) The rope fish love is real!

Happy to hear everything is working out for you!

(Aren't goldfish cold water fish? I might be wrong, but I thought they needed big, cool tanks?)

Yeah, Vancouver_98683 Vancouver_98683 my ropes were pretty slow to gain length, but instead switched to getting thicker. I didn't keep them long enough to give you a great idea but they're not fast after about 10".

True gold fish like cooler temps. And will eat all your plants .
I'd say yours are at around 15-16" and the biggest probably 1/2" diameter. My 2 that have grown any have hit 10" and 12" now still not gaining a whole lot of weight, it's proportional to length atm.

Goldfish will live in any temps, it's just a need of dissolved oxygen that has to be met which is more difficult in higher temps as far as I understand.

Fishies are looking good! :D

It depends on the variety of goldfish. This one is fine in cold and tropical temps. Boombah is a big girl, not full size but a slow grower. They start growing their poms at about 18 weeks old. She is about 6-8 months old based on her pom size. Her intake is far bigger than her output, unlike many other goldfish that can kill a tank with their bioload lol any output she has, the shrimp get right away.

I will still be getting a 75g for this group in March. This one is temp to get them out of the 10 they were in until March. I might need slightly bigger though, boombah will get around 12" long. It will take a good while to reach that, she is 5" now appx and will grow slowly.

Lol yup, she was a mass destroyer of the plants. She doesn't bother the caladium at all though.

So havent heard from you in a bit how's everyone doing?

Yea been a busy couple weeks , tank wise. I had to completely break down the tank and get the sand out of it. It was a horrible experience but learned I had the wrong sand and had too much in it, topped with it not getting cleaned first. Whew it went rancid no matter how much I cleaned. So I have river pebbles in it now until I move next year and get the bigger tank. I'll be armed with knowledge next time lol fish, surprisingly, are healthy and active, despite the downfall. I have one new filter in the tank, the other one is still from the rancid mess, I don't want the tank to reset completely so it will be a process fully getting it back to normal.

Meanwhile, I now have 38 sunset fire platy fry in a nursery, they are currently 9 days old and doing great. I have another one in a different nursery waiting to have her fry. So, it's been busy lol

The pompon goldfish keeps rearranging the tank, knocking the bubbler out, pulling up the plant in there, moving decorations, such a moose lol

Beamer is starting to take food from me now too! She is very active now that I have a heater and no longer freaks out when I go by the tank.
