I'd pass on the home depot stuff. Ive never used it but heard its hard to clean and easily clouds the water

so, is there a brand or store that is best?

No? These filters use cartridges...

2 - 20 g and 40g the 20g came from my 10g tank. That's the one with the older cartridges. The 40g filter has new filtration.

Yes. I put the 10g tank water and it's filtration system onto the 30g tank to keep it from resetting. I knew I would be setting up the 10g tank again at some point so I just left the system in the 30 tank. But then it went down hill a week and a half ago from the sand. So currently, the 20g filtration is what is keeping my 30g tank from resetting. I had to take the 40g filter system to my lfs to get cleaned really good then I put a new cartridge in it. So, the entire tank has been broke down and the 20g filter is keeping it steady (surprisingly).

What type of sponge goes into the filter? How long would it need to be in there?

Some of those filters have a sponge by the cartridges. I wouldn't mess with it. Probably a good week at least. How often do you change the cartridges?
