I just thought I would throw this out here and hope to get some information, tips, and tricks. I want to devote an aquarium specifically to shrimp, I've practiced with simpler forums of shrimp such as Triops but I want to move up into a type that lasts longer.

My wants and needs are:
- To be able to have multiple types of shrimp that co-exist.

- Shrimp need to be hardy to chemical changes and the like, my precious aquariums were almost chemical free in that aspect so I'm completely clueless on knowing what to add/subtract to keep shrimp healthy.

- Availability to Canada

- My tank will range from 20 gallon to 40 gallon.

- Suggestions on easy beginner Shrimp would be helpful.

- I would like a long life span, I'm scared to let shrimp breed and have over crowding so I would like to keep a decent size population that lasts a while.. perhaps breeding very rarely to keep things going.

- What types of filters/accessories/sands to add and recommended sites to get them online.

That's all I can think of at the moment any additional suggestions or information would be very appreciated and helpful to me.

Thanks.

well, don't start worrying about over population from breeding, shrimp are very cannibalistic and that should keep the population cap, and if you're still paranoid, get a betta, they Looooooooooove fry.

I hope that helps :)

Red Cherry Shrimp (RCS) are easy to keep and easy to breed. You can usually find someone selling them in the classifieds or on Aquabid.com. And if you do have a surplus of RCS, they are always in demand, so you could make a few bucks to support your addiction... I mean hobby;)

I was thinking having both Cherry and Ghost shrimp in same tank... will that work?

Also what would be the best size tank for 20 to 40 shrimp?

One more... I have a seller willing to sell cherry shrimp with me it comes with java moss in each bag with each shrimp... would it be good to put the java moss in the tank with I heard the cherries perfer that and the moss is very easy to keep.

Any other suggestions or ideas would be great.

Another quick thought I was just looking at the different shrimp for sale I'm curious has any one had any luck with various different types of shrimp all together, It would be cool to have many diffent types together in my aquarium. Just wondering :)

I would think that you could have different shrimp together as long as they are the same size. It would be cool to have lots of different colored shrimp in a heavily planted tank. You'll have to take pics when you get it set up!

Sorry to double post, had another thought today.

I've heard it is possible to have up to 40 shrimp living happily in a 20 gallon tank, is this true?

I'm wondering what types of aquatic plants I'll need, how to care for the plants without killing the shrimp... any tips would be great on this one.

Filters and other equipment... can anyone recommend some?

any plant really, don't really need to add anything for the plants, except for the fertilizer sometimes, but that's not going to hurt anything.
