  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you for all the information...I think im going to need to get the tank drilled if I get into the reef because i have heard they need a lot of water flow...in terms of lights, I am going to have to look around but I have heard good things about metal hallides and reef tanks...

you done NEED to drill you tank,
though alot of people do it and some just buy pre-drilled tanks,
personally i dont like it, i dont know why, and i dont really have a reason.
but there are other options to getting water from your tank down to a sump style filter.
as for myself, i have an overflow unit that i bought online from CPR aquatics like this one.
http://www.cpraquatic.com/products/overflows.html
i have it on my 150gal taking water down to my 33gal sump and it works great.
and again there are more options than this, you can even make your own overflow unit.
check out the DIY forums for more info on them.
hope that helps.

As a person who in the last year has gone down the road you are about to I have this advice to give you
Move slowly I researched and planned my reef tank for 2 years before the first drop of saltwater was mixed (oh and like you my first thought was FOWLR)
Do NOT take the advice of 1 person as gospel
Join as many reef boards as you can find there are probably a couple of dozen opinions to any 1 question you ask. its up to you to decide what will work best for you
Read Read Read then Read some more
Check out the GARF website lots of good info I am currently using their bulletproof reef formula for my 120 reef with nice results
Be prepared to lay out some cash this is not cheap
and remember Nothing Good Happens Fast

Joe Fish,

Thank you very much for your input...I have been reading on several different forums and have posted similar questions on other boards. I have been reading and I do realize that it is not cheap. This is something that I have wanted to do for a long time and I think I am ready to start the planning phase of my saltwater career in the hobby.

Again, Thank you and everyone else for all your help and if there is any other information you would like to provide, I would greatly appreciate it!

well i would take it to any class manufacturing facility im sure they will drill it for you. if not just do a google search lol that always works for me. good luck reef tanks are soooo much fun you find something new everyday and find yourself a good reef fourm like 3reef.com there are alot of stickies and articles that you will learn alot from.
NO, I would not do that!
You/they need to first find out if the pane you plan on drilling is tempered or not, otherwise you could just end up with a shattered tank if it turns out to be tempered.

Thats a good point...I'm realizing if I want to do this setup right, I am better off just getting a tank with built in overflows...I posted an add a few days ago looking for a tank but nobody has replied...I'm sure getting a tank with built in boxes will save me a lot of hassle.

CPR makes HOB aftermarket overflows.. though they can be problematic...

i've never had an issue with my CPR overflow, although it is in FW
are there known problems with them ?
