Howdy folks, I'm a long time lurker and admirer of the page and of all you wonderful people, and decided to finally join the club this morning! I've had various tanks throughout my childhood but I'll admit- I had no idea what I was doing then, I just knew I LOVED aquariums and the entire idea of fish keeping.
Fast Forward at least 10years I decided to pick the hobby back up last year out of sheer boredom and wanted to keep something I've always dreamed of keeping- a FlowerHorn.
I hobbled from LFS to LFS and other vendors/market platforms to find local breeders who can help me find the perfect fish. I came across a fellow who had a few Jaguar Cichlid x FlowerHorn hybrid fry. I took one look at the parents and couldn't imagine what their offspring would look like... one of the litter was roughly 2-3x bigger than all his siblings, I instantly fell in love and brought him home in a snack size Ziploc bag. He colored up normally after a day or so in his new tank, and I quickly saw his fighting stripes come forth before my eyes in an instant! it was mesmerizing! Come January 31/2022 will mark my one year of keeping him, he's exploded in size and ATTITUDE!!!I just got him a gorgeous female Jag to hopefully pair off with and see what comes out!

Thank you so much! I'm learning more and more each day, and as I look at other species in the larger family picture I see various traits he possess. Those photos are when he was approximately 4-6months old he looks a little different now, I just haven't taken recent photos :p

Welcome to the forum!
That is a beautiful cichlid! I can only imagine lots of attitude!
Reminds me a lot of a Jack Dempsey, the profile is taller but a lot of the colors are similar. Interesting how hybrids work!

When I saw the younger pictures of the cichlid I thought it actually was a JD ?

He's got a nasty attitude for sure, it was cute when he was smaller now I HAVE to remove him to do any sort of maintenance because he will just go postal LOL I gave up on aquascaping and plants because well...you know how it goes lol
I’ve had my 7” flowerhorn since he was hardly 1”. Every time I do any maintenance on his tank he draws blood from my hand. Cichlids are some nasty fu***rs. How do you remove him without damaging scales?

Welcome to the fishy family!

My Amphilophus Saggitae would attack me any chance he could. 20200602_094959.jpg
So I started netting him in tank so I could clean.

After two years of netting him every three days he finally signed a cease fire and just stays on the opposite side of the tank that I am cleaning. I suggest trying this route, physically removing him during tank cleaning can be stressful and cause weakness for other diseases to set in.

That's actually such a great idea I never thought about that I tried my damnedest to avoid removing him from the tank and just put up with him but at his size now easily over 8-10" it hurts like a you know what lol
