New to the game and I have questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry say a pair of oscars or is that 125 plus? My son likes the Acara. I guess 90 is really still "small" is this game. Going to go back to the drawing board

After some more reading and my son winning I think we will look for a baby EbJd and a baby Blue gene dempsey. If we can not find the bgjd then a red oscar and some silver dollars

I think it's absolutely fantastic they you are not only seeking advice, but taking it as well. Many people (including myself at some point) only take the information they want.

Personally I think I got lucky with my EBJD experience. Neither died and one got to a beautiful 6" before I reghomed him. That being said I've heard many horror stories about them from other keepers.

As for oscars, I've never had the pleasure of keeping one simple because when I had the appropriate sized tank, other fish made the cut before the Oscar. You'll hear arguments on weather a 75 or 125 is the "minimum" tank size for one, and both sides have good points, but for starters I think your 90 will work very well.

I agree with stanz, big fan of chocolates. Lots of pretty under tone colors and great appetite similar to oscars. Also forgot to say, that your severum idea could work well too. Very laid back fish, that get a good size and display good color. As with many fish, it often comes down to personality but if you're set on an EBJD, would could do a severum with it. Mixing normal JD and EBJD can be hard as I learned when my normal JD snapped and near killed my EBJD...

We are going to do the EbJd for sure. We will have to find a tank mate for him. If we went the route of 2 electric dempseys just start them both as babies? Know that I look at the tank and think about max size of fish with decor in there I see what everyone is saying. Smaller pair or single is better.

I would get a group of EBJD's, maybe 7-10, that way you have better chances of healthy specimens living to adulthood, also the chances are that you will end up with a pair
