New to the stingray scene, and have some beginner questions.

If you have ammonia readings I personally would do 30% in the morning and 30% in the evening water changes. The cloudiness in the water is probably a bacterial bloom caused by the newly cycling tank. Don't worry about that and don't add anything to try and clear it. Just keep doing the water changes untill you have seen the ammonia dissapear, then the nitrite readings rise then fall. Until you get nitrate readings that are higher in the tank than your tapwater then you know the tank is cycled. This will take about two months till you have a stable filter. Good luck and welcome to ray keeping.

Went out last night and bought a fluval FX5 per the advice here. I talked the guy at the shop down to what I found online as the best deal, so he actually hooked it up nicely.

Added seachem, and tested my levels.

Ammonia - 2PPM
Nitrates - 5PPM
Nitrites - 0PPM
PH - 7.8

Any advice aside from water changes to correct those levels?

Im going to be doing a 50% water change later today and following up, thanks so much for all the advice so far. That fluval is ****ing nuts and the tank looks MUCH clearer already. You guys are the best, thanks so much.

I would beef up your filtration. 7x2x2 Always a good idea to go overboard with your filtration, especially with your rays as they produce a lot of ammonia. To keep it simple you might want to consider running a canister filter, I personally like the fluval fx5. Some might say its overboard but imo its better safe than sorry. I personally don't think your tank is cycled yet. Try adding beneficial bacteria, the one recommended the most on here is "stability by seachem". I couldn't find any so I'm using stress zyme.

Should I just be running the FX5, or should I leave one of the 110's in for oxygenation purposes?

Added seachem last night.

Thanks for the advice.

You're going to need ALL the bacteria you can get right now. Not the best idea to pull out a filter at this point...

Yessir - Ill leave all 3 running for now.

Just tested my tap water.

Its pretty good.
Ammonia - 0
Nitraties - 0
Nitrites - 0
PH - 8.2

So at least I know that with dilligent water changes I can force my less than optimal ammonia levels down. Ill follow up later today after a water change and more seachem, and a retest with updated numbers.

great job on the fx5. i agree gshock on that you need all the bacteria you can get now. imo leave all 3 filters on y our tank until your done cycling. and then, only take 1 of the ac110s off. at that flow (with the fx5-900gph, and 110-500gph) your truning that tank 6.6 times an hour. imo, if you have all three filters just go ahead and use all three. over filtration wont hurt a thing. and thanks for listening to ppls advice. like you said just keep up on the water changes and youll be fine.

earlier you said your buddy hooked you up with your tank and ray. did you pay for them? it sounds like you got a good set up for either real cheap or free.

looks like you are now on the right track. keep doing water changes and monitoring the water params. I'd another fx5 if you wanna remove the AC110s. its a big tank and more filteration will let you add more rays/ other fish. good luck.

Got a hell of a deal on it, both rays, a 7x2x2 tank, and a stand, as well as the AC110's and a heater for $650.

He just wanted to make sure they would go to a good home.

ill give ya 700 for it lol. thats a good deal. how is everything going for ya so far?
