Sump measures 50" long, 24" tall, 20" wide. Bioball compartment is roughly 18"x20"x20", so about 30 gallons for water. Any idea how many gallons of bioballs will be needed?
Depends on bioload honestly. You won't need much to start if you get small fish. A nice 5 gallon bucket would do, then add more if needed. Me personally I'd probably fill it up
I was thinking 3-4 five gallon buckets to fill it up. The water will go through two sponge sections and I'll have a loop off my return pump to send water to the bioball compartment. Not sure how many gallons per hour I should put through there, but I was thinking 400-500 gph?
That sounds very low for such a large tank. Youre only looking at just over 1x an hour which isnt very efficient. I would do an absolute minimum of 3x turnover, I run about 6x turnover on mine and have never had any issues. I am using a super dart gold on my return.
OK, much appreciated. I'm going to buy the Dart/Snapper hybrid pump. The bioballs are basically on a loop off the main pump after going through two sponge sections. I'm guessing bioballs are still the best for the trickle filter?
Yea, people use all sorts of crazy stuff in there but bio balls are still the go to. I've used lava rock and packing peanuts but I've had the best results with bio balls.
