New Tropical Pond

Almost finished with the second fountain. They hid the water outlet behind the rocks. I thought that was kind of cool.
While they were doing touch ups on the fountain I had them put another row of rock on my other pond. Now that we're building the terrace up a little bit for the water run off I don't want the run off in my pond.

I need some help guys. I have two barrels that lead to the two fountains. I have an inlet, an outlet to the falls, and a bottom drain that will lead to an irrigation system. How would your suggest that I rig the barrels for good filtration? The air vac system isn't really an option now. I have filter brushes, plenty of rocks, sand, and media mats that I could cut into circles and place in the barrels. I will be able to back flush the barrels into the irrigation outlets. By the way, the water is coming from filter skimmers so it will be fairly clean. I don't want too much restriction of water flow but you never can have too much filtration right. Thank's
Is inlet to the barrel in the bottom or top fill?
My filter has the plumbing going into the bottom, up through a few Malta Mats, and then through a mass of roots from the Hyacinth. The water is crystal clear. I have seen filters that are bascially gravity feed, and they work great. I think it comes down to personal preference and aesthics. And in your case space is an issue.

The inlet is in the bottom. I was thinking about catching the particles at the bottom and then flushing them our with a good back wash. What would work best at the bottom? 1/2 inch rock then matts? I suppose about a 4 inch space at the bottom for things to settle.
Holy smokers! Look what I found in my front yard. These plants are so cool. They grow huge and have a root system that kind of supports them up in the air. I also wanted to add a little height to the garden in the back. I had a long lunch break so I decided to plant a couple more of the heliconias that I had bought.
Marcos is putting the finishing touches on the pebble work. He's mixing twilight blue grout and the stuff we glued the pebbles to the floor with. The bond seems less porous and holds the pebbles better.
