I've had this guy for almost 10 years. He used to be in my wifes 55 up until about a year ago. He's over 12" and just lays around all day, and swims around all nite. He's never bothered anything and really is a gentle giant. He'll eat anything, even smelts and shrimp but really loves his shrimp pellets.

They are commonly called ripsaw cats but ripsaw is used for other "spiney" armoured cats as well.

Did you really mean 12" and ten years old? Mine made 12" in under 1 year and he misses a few meals here and there due to heavy competition from my giraffe cat.

yeah, my cat in the pics on the first page is only a few years old and he's 19.5" long with only half a tail.
 
awesome. Tank on the smallish side, howver, no?:)
 
yeah tank is a little small for him (125). although since he's so inactive he seems to be just fine with it. but i am in the process of getting a new 180g poly tub. bottom of tub will be around 30" by 48" at the bottom.
 
think that'll be sufficient size at least for a while? like i said i have little to no experience with these guys....i mean i know my catfish but this particular species is throwin me for a bit of a loop
 
I have had two of these fish, they both outgrew a 135 gallon, the biggest tank I had at the time. From there they went into an indoor-outdoor koi pond in a hotel I worked at. They are now close to 24" and look like sharks prowling the pond. They are harmless to other fish, but they have scales like shark's teeth along their sides (and just as sharp) and they thrash around if scared, cornered or captured. Trying to get it from the tank to pond was exciting to say the least! Highly reccommended if you have the room!
