I have had my male and female convicts in a tank for about a month and a half together. For the past 2 days I have kept off the lights in order to rid myself of and algae problem. When I finally turned on the lights I saw a bunch of eggs and within a second I had the lights off but there were a lot of eggs. This is the second time they have had babies together but that time the eggs were eaten. All the eggs are brown, is this good or bad? I’m going to try to put a pic in but it might not show up. Is there any extra care I should give them? Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate are always 0 as I have a lot of plants. What should I feed the babies if they do indeed hatch. Should I remove the pleco? Here is the picture (I hope).

They should be fine, how big is the pleco? Both parents will guard those eggs but if the pleco is large it could cause a problem. First bites by Hikari is what I used for my convict babies. Also flake food that I crushed up a little. Get ready because they will keep breading and breading. It can become a problem if you don't separate the males from females as they get a bit older. Inbreeding can create problems for the fish as they get older. I would possibly get a bigger tank or get some water movement going in your tank. Good luck , I hope this helps somewhat.

It looks as the eggs are fertilized. If they are bright white that means it wasn't.

The parents should do all the care of the fry. Three days to hatch, another three days as wigglers. Then they get to swimmer stage. First couple days will stay near the "nesting" area. Soon enough tho they will be herding the fry around the tank to graze on algea/what ever they run across.

I used Hikari first bites with good effect. Baby brine shrimp is also a great choice. Crushed up flakes works as well. Don't worry about feeding till swimmer stage. If you can let the algae grow on everything save the front/side glass.

I had a 55 set up with a pair of HRP's that breed 15 times or so. I only had three of all them fry make it. I had Swordtails, roseline sharks, pleco that ate all the fry. The HRPs returned the favor and ate all their fry. Everyone stayed busy breeding and out of each other way, save the fry munching.
It all went south when I took the other fish out to try and actually get some HRP fry. Dad didn't have anything else to chase about so all agression went to the female.20180815_175051.jpg

So should I turn the lights back on to encourage algae growth for the fry and risk spooking the parents?

The lights shouldn't bother the parents any. Don't think it will mater one way or the other for this batch. If you want to keep breeding tho I would let it grow.

Ladies and Gentlemen
WE HABE WIGGLERS
I got scared when I went to check on the babies this afternoon and saw no egg. The male was hovering above a pit in the gravel, then I saw the female doing the same but in a different pit. Hers went to the glas and on it I say a vibrating mass of babies

You can see I have a crawfish in that tank and even she (yes I checked) with her armor will not go near anymore as they will keep hitting it same with the pleco, even though I thought he’d be an issue
