New Whiptail

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never seen a WT like the one pictured on the guys hand. Must have!

More whiptail eye candy, a pic I took at the Shedd aquarium in Chicago.
Note the S. Aureum (giant whiptails) hanging on the branches. There were tons more in the tank hanging everywhere like seed pods on a tree. The tank was also full of P. scalare and many many different plecos. Security had to be summoned to remove me from the building at closing time.

Haha! did they have to remove you by force? If it were me they would have! They don't tend to stay at the bottom of the tanks like most plecos, they are often found high up. Mine is always hanging on a piece of wood.

Do you keep the generally larger sturisoma sp. ?? Mine are all over the tank but mostly spend their time foraging on the bottom. From my observations, whiptails that fall into the rineloricaria group (like mine) are usually very flat from head to tail. This might have something to do with that type of behavior. Sturisoma sp. seem to be aero-dynamic in a different way. taller body where the dorsal meets, pointy "snout", and head not so flat. More likely to be seen hanging by its mouth from objects in the tank.

Nope mine is of the Loricaria genus. he will hang out in numerous places, but his favorite is up on the wood, also the lighting is lower.

this is my favourite, i like the "feathers" also its on a stamp so must be amazing!!!

there is one with a bright white speckle all down each side, like dots. that ones really cool too. forget which it is

Do you have a pic of it??? I don't think I have seen that one yet, or just am having a brain fart.

Rineloricaria sp. L10 There is also a red variety. I have one. the red one is L10a Red lizard whiptail. http://www.scotcat.com/loricarcommon.htm This is the best place for pleco ID. I love this site. As for the sex. If it has tiny hairs or bristles (body odontodes) all over its body and fins it is a male. If it has not hairs it is a female.
