I just picked up this wolf fish the other day. It's about 6-7". I've never kept one before so I have a couple of questions.

What do you feed yours and what methods do you use? I just dropped a couple of prawns in front of him and he snapped them up.

I'm not sure what species it is so could someone please ID for me.
Also how fast and how fast do these wolf fish grow?
Thanks

Hoplias Malabaricus. They will generally grow 0.5"-1" Per month and will get over a 12" very quickly before slowing. My chap hit 15" in just under a year from 6". food-wise, they are piscivores and will generally accept most meaty foods- Prawn, Stinte, Whitebait etc all fine.

Most will say that they are generally not suited to community aquariums but it has been done before.

Hope that helps and good luck!

He doesn't seem to be aggressive. I have twenty neon tetras in the tank with him at the moment. He doesn't chase them but he has eaten a few that venture too close. I would like to do some kind of community since he is pretty inactive. Has anyone ever tried one with angel fish.
So far I've seen him eat prawn and even a hikari gold sinking pellet.

Also what size tank do you suggest for life. I have him in a 48x18x18 at the moment. I figured that would last a while.

They seem to only be able to be kept with other large robust fish like arowana, pbass and anything big enough that looks like it will give them a hard time.
Looks nice!

I do have a nice collection of pbass but don't fancy risking them with these teeth.

Chances are he will kill anything you throw in the tank with him unless it is notably larger (Twice the size minimum). There are one or two videos on Youtube of Woves with various cichlids and they all seem to point towards aggression from the Wolf but it does usually depend on the individual- I know my Mala was a terror and would kill anything that got too close but he was also incredibly active so I guess it's swings and roundabouts.

In regards to the tank; the 48x18x18 will last a while but it is very possible he will get to nearly 18"- I always thought that a 24" wide tank was best.

HTH

I had a 5" red devil in with my 6" wolf for a few days (woman thought the tank needed some color lol) thinking he could hold his own, but the wolf attacked him relentlessly...would grab the rd by the face every time he got close....

For now I have the wolf and a similar sized rhino pleco in a 90 gal- no problems between the two so far...
