This should be interesting.

It's that time of the year when, you know, you vouch to yourself, and anyone who'll listen, that you're stopping this, starting that, cutting down on the other, only for it all to go south about 3 days into the new year.

As a rule I don't make new year's resolutions for this very reason but this year I am making one, for the good of my health if for nothing else. I have a shocking sweet tooth. Biscuits, cakes and toffees, if I find them in the house, are gone, it drives my wife bonkers.

The only reason I'm probably not clinically obese is the fact I'm a keen cyclist which allows me to basically eat what I want. But weight gain is not the issue with me....it's my sugar intake, and my age, and put them both together and I'm afraid of what the future may hold for me health wise.

You guys, like it or lump it, are coming with me on my journey, lol. Whether it's a resounding success or abject failure, I'll visit this thread once in a while with progress reports.

I have a couple of days before it kicks in so, in the meantime, I have plenty of confectionary to polish off that I've been bought for Xmas. :naughty:

Anyone else thinking of making a new year's resolution for the good of their health? By all means use this thread to keep us updated.

I'm with you. I don't do resolutions but I will do my best to clean up my diet. I also have a sweet tooth.

Yeah, I think we're both in the same boat. We're pretty fit guys, you with your running and me on the bike. We're both unlikely to suddenly gain excess weight, as long as we continue training. But the sugar thing scares me at my age whether I'm fit or not.

Sugar is the devil.

When I was a kid my parents didn't understand how bad sugar was, I put it on everything, even mac & cheese. My day started off with sugar coated processed cereal, and even a healthy bowl of oatmeal was covered in brown sugar. Brown sugar was healthy, compared to white sugar, at least that's what my parents thought back in the1960's. Obviously that's not the case. Forget about diabetes for a minute, a disease that is currently out of control world-wide. Sugar causes inflammation, chronic inflammation leads to numerous forms of disease, including heart disease, and heart attacks. Sugar also feeds cancer cells, we know a lot more today than we did even 20 yrs ago regarding cancer, and the role sugar plays in the diet, and the disease.

Being fit, or even skinny, won't save you from the end result of chronic inflammation of your body. With age, it eventually all catches up with you. Ask me how I know that. lol

Good luck with your resolution gents, for your overall health it will probably be the best new years resolution that you have ever attempted.

I have resolved to stop reading about other people's resolutions, and to stop making any myself.

I made the same resolution last year and broke it, so...:)

I'm glad you've chipped in Neil. I've always had a sweet tooth, but always been fit and skinny too. I wrongfully thought, and for way too long, that my fitness and lack of excess weight made it sort of ok to have a bit of extra sugar in my diet.

I've had no problems up to now but when things do start going wrong, and they will with age, I'd prefer the things that do start going wrong not to be directly related to my years and years of excess sugar intake. However, I have a feeling I'm bolting the door but the horse has long ran away.

Your fault entirely! I managed 363 days and then you slipped in a zinger right at the eleventh hour...and I bit like a starving bass hitting a surface popper...:)

Another sugar addict here. I'm already a diabetic. I have the same resolution to minimize my sugar intake. I'm horrible with soda, cookies, cakes, and that's just the obvious stuff.

I'm not sure how diabetes works, RD. RD. Is it brought on through years of dietry neglect regarding just sugar, I suspect there are other things in play? Eventual diabetes is what is forcing my hand regarding me drastically reducing my intake.

F FMA4ME . You'll have to hop on board my train of sugary abstinence, and see how long it lasts, lol. I'm looking forward to the challenge, though a little concerned regarding my staying power.
