That's really it right there. Instead of wasting time and money on researches and polls and constantly being asked about it, just change the name. If you're winning no one will care wth your name is.

And one last time, offensive or not, the word is defined as a racial slur. That's undeniably.

Glad to see government worried about a 60 year old nfl team name while our country is a damn mess and they're getting ready to ram Obama care down our throats.

They wrote a letter. How cute.

Honestly is varies. I've seen Native American groups offended and I've seen many who are not. It's prob easier just to do it regardless of who, what, when, where and why is offended. It's clearly defined as a racial slur. Really all I need to know.

I think the mass of people are forgetting that the Redskins name is not being used in a vulgar or demeaning manner, there are not hundreds of thousands of fans calling themselves a redskins for the sake of being racial, the name has been transformed into pride, commitment and honor. I for one hope Mr Snyder sticks to his guns and fights off the opposition.

Would Irish people appreciate "the Fighting Micks?"

Yes. At least the Irish Americans and Irish Canadians I know, the transplants over here, and the family back on Éire.

Why use such a mild example? Go for true bigotry

Ha, the n word is used as a term of endearment but let me drop it in public and you won't see people of all races go good for him! That guy is just showing his pride! Lame cop out.
Should focus on the meaning of the word and not the later intent

Both interesting points, yours as well as Mike's...as for the answer to your question I guess you'd have to do a poll of a cross section of people of Irish decent lol.I don't recall any grumbling over the Notre Dame name and character which is kind of a stereotype depicting Irish men as a bunch of rambunctious brawlers.

It's not a mild one, or rather, it was just as damaging in the 1800's to the Irish immigrants as the n- word. It's not considered racist (wrong word really, nationalist maybe) anymore because on the whole, they started using it amoungst themselves, turning it into a pride thing so now it can just be shrugged off instead of causing fights.

And actually, I do cheer when the n- word is used in public as a term of endearment. Why? It's the only way to take away the power of the word much like the Irish and Italians have done with their racist slurs.

Actually, I know a couple of Irish transplants up in Canada that are huge Notre Dame fans because of the 'fighting Irish' moniker. The only part that rubs them the wrong way is the depiction of a Clurichaun as the logo.
