What you caught in Tanzania could be native carp fish, for lack of teeth and adipose fin. If it is toothy, it is likely a characin. The Tiger fish in Africa is as fearsome as vampire fish in SA, both are predatory characin and fighter game fish.

It had teeth; you can't see them well in the photo. That was bycatch while I was fishing for Tigerfish.

There are similar looking fish all over the world. Here is one I caught in Tanzania:

Looks like what they call "gundu". No idea which species, but with the body shape, the small black adipose and the forked red caudal it seems to be some kind of Alestidae. Some of them can grow quite big. Like Alestes stuhlmanii or A. macrophthalmus.
