I am not exactly a top breeder, I can't even manage to breed myself lately. Anyway, I have a pair of Nics and I am looking for advice. They were moving gravel together in the store, and defending a spot. They are doing the same in my tank. I have them alone now. Any advice you can offer? Leave lights on, shut them off, food to feed, temp, etc.

Your help will be appreciated, and pics will be coming.

Do a small water change with slightly cooler water. It has worked for different pairs that I've had before.

I was advised by a respected breeder to use PVS pipes. In nature, like the Neet, it was observed that Nic's would build tunnels and lay eggs inside.

They have cleaned out a large flower pot. Should I get another and make a cave, or will they lay in the single pot?

leave the pot, Ewurm..they have picked it up..

what you need to pay attention to is males agression towards the girl..

watch closely and that should be it...

There hasn't been any aggression between them. Which is which, by the way?

Also, should I keep feeding them? Their appetite hasn't decreased any for sure.

)do a water change with slightly cooler water,
add more tunnels and cave if they have not picked a site yet- this is also
helpfully for the female to hide if the male is aggressive,
)start feeding about 3times aday in the morning-live or frozen foods, mid day-staple like pellets, evening-again live or frozen foods.
)also up the temp to about 80 this will make the eggs hatch quicker and fry grow quicker-but this is bad as most cichlid get more aggressive with temp
)lights imo doesnt do alot just keep to the normal hours.
)give them privacy- dont do what i did 1st time start shinning torches to see whats there every couple of hours...you can do this about 2times aday to see
) if the tank has been cycled for awhile the should be food for them for awhile
)i would seporate the fry when you seem nessesary- if they are on there own the is no real point just let the m+d do the work,
)get some frozen baby brine shrimp or get hatching them, they will feed on this for about 1-2weeks then you can start feeding finely crushed flake.
do water changes about once every 2-3 days this will help them stay healthy and grow fast
good luck hoped this helped-need pics:D

Thanks for the advice. Will get pics.

Here's a bad shot, I'll try and get more.

I've never had nics, but since they are CA cichlids maybe this will apply; I've breed texans, FMs and convicts, with all of them it worked best to provide an overabundance of hiding spots. This always helped the female cope with the males aggression which at times seemed to be nonexistant and then suddenly overwelming.

Good luck with them.
