Hi There,
Fairly new to this site. But noticed your post and wanted to reply. Many moons ago I was taught by Ginny Eckstein (who was a mentor/mom) while I was growing up that knocking out a hole in the bottom of the flower pot and turning it upside down was the best way to breed them.
Well fast forward quite a few years and I have a breeding pair in a 29 gallon (yes I know it's too small) with several overturned flower pots (that is the top side facing down and bottom side up). I have no issues with male aggession, but what is cool about this concept is that if you put several different size pots/holes in the tank that the female can fit down in the hole and the male cannot. Again, my male never bothers the female to that degree, but it's a good thing to have. Plus as the female lay the eggs the male just hovers over to fertalize without being in the actual pot itself.
My results: I currently have 3/4 inch fry in the tank and two weeks ago got a surprise........EGGS! I took matters into my own hands and removed eggs from the tank, but suffice it to say I think they are comfortable.
Just last week I saw 4 more nics that are much smaller (3-4") but with color as good as my big pair and set them up as well. So I guess I am a bit of a nic fan.
By the way....the eggs are non adhesive so don't stress out if they do lay eggs and you see them on the aquarium floor. It's the way it should be.
Hope this helps.
