Hey Guys,

My rays get a very varied diet, Krill, shrimp massivore silversides etc... I also usually try to supplement with nightcrawlers, but as they are getting big the cost of buying them in bait cups is getting big.... lol

So a couple questions here,

1) does anybody buy in bulk, if so where is a good place to get them and if there are any short comings of buying them this way.

2) I have been doing some research and found 2 kinds African and Canadian. I really dont want to refrigerate 500 to 1000 worms at a time so if you can share which you use and how you keep them that would be great.

Thanks

Buying in bulk only works well if you have a place really close that will ship to you. As always shipping kills Ive asked so so many places. Look at findworms.com you might find some local places.
I started a worm farm for when I will have pups and might need worms but so far I dont really feed from it. My rays dont gets worms anymore and they would far rather have tilapia and my pellet mix. My advice get all your fish off of worms. Starve those fat suckers.
A worm farm takes a bit of work. If you dont feed them they wont really produce worms too much and for the size you might need to feed a few stingrays a couple times a week you will need a large system. So when I have pups I plan to feed from my farm and see if they can keep production up while I feed them off one by one but anymore for the month or two ill just buy worms when needed I think but push them onto other food fast.
Also I have European night crawlers and they are known to be better for warm and cold weather. Not needing a fridge. My worm farm is under my stand next to my pump.

To me they are not a cost effective food source. But when I add new food to my worm farm it looks healthy with lots of worms. But when I feed as much as I do to my fish I could go through a bucket full of worms in no time I bet. Thats why I keep in with plans on feeding them to pups. I ordered the worms off amazon actually. They came in small and needes feeding so not what you normally get out of the store.

I used to buy the Canadians in bulk but it just got too costly and too many losses (OF WORMS)over time.i would buy 1000 or more at a time and refrigerate them.rising costs have forced me to no longer feed them.

hmmmm....

Didysis, unclejimswormfarm is like 250 night crawlers for 30 bucks or so and free shipping....
No body is solely on worms but i like to vary there diet as much as possible.

Diggin- thats why i was curious about african, no regrigeration needed.

Thanks for the input it makes me think about it some more

Start your own culture?

Nah, enough work taking care of the fish, never mind the worms...lol

The price is not my concern it is more the housing/losses/potential mess etc

If you're not planning on making worms the staple diet of your rays then why not just buy a pound or two of worms and culture them in a DIY worm box. I think this would be best given your situation. No need to keep them in the fridge. Just keep em alive! Btw, I think the european nightcrawlers are more common in your area
