nightmare!!!! - fish eating pellets

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah, it will be a relief!!!

i got a question for ya, you say some of yours where 2", wat was their colour at this point? were they silver or darker? did they have red bellies yet?

They had slightly red bellies. Not super bright. They definitely got more colorful the older they got. Even now at 6" one of them is much more vibrant red than the other two. I don't feed them color enhancers or anything but their color looked better after feeding than shrimp than it did on a strictly fish diet.

I've been thinking of poking pellets into their shrimp in hopes to enhance their color a little.

This is a pic of one of them about a month ago (the others hiding behind him)

ah rite, he looks great!!!

im thi8nking of maybe putting the pellets in some kind of juice from a fish product to see if they go for them more...

i am off to the petshop now to buy some bloodworms, the blocks seem quite big if i remember them correctly, (about the size of a dice) would i just chop it in half while still frozen?

When i had my serra and it was young i just fed it tilapia, raw shrimp, scallops etc. When it finally got size on it and was able to take a decent sized chunk in one swipe i packed all of his fish full of pellets for added nutrients. Worked like a charm.

did you manage to get him to take pellets on there own?

anyway, back from lfs, went for bloodworms, but the woman who worked there said they had frozen cockles mix in the little cubes, she suggested this for my fish so i got that. gonna try it tonite.

she also she that it was bad to feed them (even tho they're babies) 3 times a day. she said to half the cube and feed a half just twice a day, then after a couple of weeks drop the whole cube in once a day.

we'll see how that goes!!!!

she also said that tilapia wouldnt really do much at all for them!!! this seems a bit odd to me.....

When you feed them the cubes, make sure to defrost them first. I do this with all my food for piranhas (shrimp, etc).

Basically just drop it into a cup, put a little hot water on it and let it thaw out. You don't need to break it up but they don't like to have frozen chilly food. My P's spit out their shrimp if it's still frozen and then grab it later. :P

Feed them bloodworms, market shrimp, mysis, krill etc etc.
Start feeding pellets along with the other things above at 2-4".

cant i just blend all this stuff up put in in cubes in the old packet (once its finished) and freeze it?

thats all these foods seems to be....

I don't see why not. If you want to make your piranhas their own food mix to freeze that seems like a fine idea. They will do alright on the regular stuff though if you don't want to do all the work.

Just make sure to defrost the bits you are going to throw in the tank!
