Nitrate experiment

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
After 24hrs the results are the same 60 nitrates. I didn't think i would see results this early im just going to test everyday to see if the nitrates are dropping. I might need another pothos plant in the other tank i don't know if ones enough.

The De Nitrate i got was from pets plus and the maker is Seachem. I thought the same thing but the guy said it would work and he was helpful in the past. I will find out in two days i guess. If it doesn't im bringing wet rocks back lol. won't adding denitrate also mess up the bio filter? If i take it out won't it mess with the tanks bio load on how it deals with ammonia and nitrite??

I know this product and am an avid Seachem advocate
The fact is that it is designed to colonize anaerobic Bacteria
That takes an oxygen free environment and time

Denitrate is not some magic purifying stone like zeolite
It will not disrupt or damage your current bio filter
and given time will only enhance its stability
In a normal filter it will process Ammonia and Nitrites

If you want to lower your Nitrates the only way thats gonna happen naow
is by doing a massive WC with low/free Nitrate water
We have Glacier machines at our grocers and convenience stores
do you have access to RO/DI machines?

ty. no i wish i did. I got water from my parents but only 10g so 5g a tank is nothing. I would need to get like 30g to notice anything. Im just trying to figure out a way with using my well water. I think the pothos plant idea will work. I wish the guys told me at pets plus. I didn't think it would work. I told him i thought its only for little nitrate problems from fish waste and overfeeding, but he said it will help the well water.

what if i put the denitrate in a 5g bucket of new water over night would that help?? I would like to get rid of them before they enter the tank but the thing that hooks up to your sick is a joke.

ok thanks im getting rdy to put it in. Denitrate the guy said could be placed in my penguin 350 behind the c filter.

There's not enough room in a 350 to be worth your wile. Denitrate works on anaerobic principles which means a deep bed and slow water flow.

My tap water is high in nitrates as well

Stick with the pothos. however there's not enough light in my basement to keep pothos growing, plus my RDK SD ate the roots clean .

I add Tetra's/Instant Ocean Natural Nitrate reducer.. did a post on this about a year ago.took my tanks down to zero and kept it there. works like a champ :headbang2

I dont know why the aversion to chemicals in your fish tank? There is nothing natural about a closed loop aquarium system?

Thats a lot of nitrate for well water.... Seems like a health risk to me.

Just use plants. They will keep your water perfect.

+1. While aquatic plants prefer ammonia they will also uptake nitrate. If you have so many plants that they starve your bb you don't need to worry about your bio bacteria. If you get yourself a ton of aquatic plants your nitrates will be sucked dry. I used to have a ten gallon tank with a dwarf puffer, and I allowed my water wisteria to go crazy inside the tank and I never had any readings on any of my test kits. I actually thought my test kits were broken until I started my planted fish tank and was adding large amounts of nitrate to feed my plants. I would get an aquatic plant that grows quickly, the faster a plant grows the more nutrients it uptakes.

Ty. I bought two aquarium plants today and plan to buy another pothos plant. I will try that tetras natural ocean stuff to in the denitrate tank after wk one. I hope the plants work.
