Nitrate Reducing Plants

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Let me know how it works out! There is no Kudzu here in SoCal. A confederate themed tank with kudzu sounds awesome.. grey and dark blue fish... hmmmm

I wonder if I took a wilted vine and brough it inside if it would come back or if it comes back from the roots...

Find some Vietnamese spinach. Grows like a weed and as a side benefit you can eat it. Sucks up nitrates and can't be killed.

Really Alan? We were talking about this plant starting to hibernate during cold season in PA this past Thanksgiving weekend. Will get some for my tanks next year.

It does slow down in the cold, at least that is what it does here. Put it in my aquaponics tub and it took over. Grew over the side and started rooting in the ground and then through the bell siphon and into the pond itself. Also has a mild taste if you like spinach.

No most of those won't work as they will not survive being under water or having waterlogged roots. How many cactus have you seen in swamps and rivers? People have been giving you ideas on nitrate reducing plants that will work but you are not paying attention. Try looking up some of those you listed and see what will survive in an aquatic environment first then ask which will work if you don't want to hear experienced answers.

I currently have Vanilla planifolia growing in two tanks, but it grows very slow. I wouldn't count on it to really make much of a difference as far as water quality. you have to be sure to keep the stem out of the water, it will rot pretty quickly.
if you can get some lizard tail plant, mine in the tank are doing well, and is growing roots from multiple spots on the stalk. the ones I planted in my emperor 400 don't seem to like so much flow, but it could just be that they don't get much light either.
I just brought home a Chlorophytum comosum cutting that I hope to grow out of my overflow. pretty fast grower with lots of hanging plantlets, I fully expect this baby to suck down some nitrates.

Technically I did tell him yes on cactus, but I was being sarcastic. I took the question to be so silly it shouldnt have been asked.

But he won't take it that way. He asks questions without any research and then only wants to listen to the ones that he agrees with already. Did this once on a tetra thread, should have stayed away but maybe it will help someone else.
