Nitrates beware!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Submereged aquatic plants consume co2 and this will always be the limiting factor without co2 injection, pothos are so effective as the consume nitrate but take the co2 from the air as they are above water (mine also do pretty well below water too). If you have pothos growing at a massive rate then the nitrates were high to begin with but will fall quickly. My pothos now grows at a steady rate of about 1 leaf every few weeks due to my 30 gal per day drip and the fact that the nitrate is at a constant 10ppm therefore less nitrate to promote growth. Pothos reduce nitrAte and not nitrIte but I think that was a typo from Peter.

Running a little experiment with some plants thought I would document my results here.

I ordered 50 4" lucky bamboo plants online (they sent more than 50) and have placed them in the 40B that I have reserved for using plants as filtration which runs on the same filter as my 300 gallon and another 40B which is being used to grow out Orino bass at the moment. This system also has a constant 3Gph drip. I will purchase a light tomorrow which will just be a spot light in the 6000k range that I will run for a few hours a day.

Here is a picture of how I have them set up

2-18-2012 Nitrate reads at or around 20PPM I will update on the 25th or there abouts

Can you tell me how much it will cost to run the light doring one year?

It would not be much at all, it is only a 13 watt bulb that is ran for around 8 hours a day. I would have to find a bill to calculate it but it is probably a few bucks a month

Again I would go either fully aquatic or pothos over the bamboo for multiple reasons. If my stock ever stays the same long enough to get an accurate experiment going I will update with how my aquatic plants are doing for me

I am finding that java moss is almost impossible to kill and grows very well the only thing I don't know is how much Nitrate it is using. I even dosed my tank with salt the other day and it didn't even flinch

Great thread. Allow me to ask a few ?s plz. As I just got done dealing with nitates 200+ thanks to a ton of wc's and pulling gravel I've got it down to 60ppm. I just added some Pothos.

1st Will pothos survive totally submerged or do I have to keep it above the waterline?

2nd Can or will it hurt any of my livestock listed below?

Tank Setup 135gal, fx5, mag350, korilla 4, 3 silver dollars, 3 Red blood parrots, 12" Green severum, 10 coreys (3 emerald & 7 swarts), 2 black spotted eels, 22" fire eel, 24" clown knife, sun catfish, and leopard plaeco

Pothos has lived for 6 months in my tank fully submerged, I do keep a lot above the water too though as it grows better there plus uses co2 from atmosphere instead of tank.

Pothos has been shown to be poisonous to cats and dogs if ingested but fish do not seem to eat it...keep an eye on your fish and remove if eh eat it would be my caution but no knowledge of any harm.

You do not need to pull out gravel to remove nitrate. Just do regular water changes. What is the nitrate of your tap water going in? Many people forget to check this and wonder why their tank doesn't drop then find 50-100 ppm out of the tap?

My pothos in my big tank get trimmed daily by my scat which seems to show no I'll effect.
