Do you have chloramines in your water? If so, that might be what's giving you the ammonia reading. Water conditioners like Prime break the chloramine bond which results in chlorine and ammonia. The resulting chlorine and ammonia should be neutralized by the Prime, but I've read it can give you false readings for ammonia.

That I am not sure. I did the test before I added any conditioner. So whatever reading the ammonia was showing, was what was in the water before the prime was added. I did however condition it every time Ive done a water change this week. Today was the only day I didnt do it only because Ive done it the past 6 days and really am not a fan of adding any chemicals, even conditioner to the tank..

Throw your old test kit away!

At least you got it all figured out! Wont be long and everything will be good again.

Me to. Only thing I hate is the retics have had to deal with the water the way it was for the past week. Hope it doesnt mess with them and cause problems...

If you now showing Ammonia, then that explains it. You have a mini cycle happening. You somehow killed off enough of your BB in the old cannister to cause it and now both the old filter and the new FX5 are trying to cycle.
Maybe purchase a bottle of "Cycle" to help speed the process along.

You did a WC without conditioning the water? The chlorine in the water will kill the BB. Every time I do a WC I shut down the pumps and make sure the tank is completely mixed using only the powerhead to ensure that the Prime has taken care of all the chlorine.

don't bother with the cycle, get something better like seachem stability if you absolutely need BB in a bottle, otherwise, just stay your course and let the filters do their jobs. might not want to have ammonia block in the filter as it can help starve your BB.

i used to keep crap like that in my filter, and found out because it was absorbing all the ammonia and nitrite that my BB starved and mini cycled. get that junk out while it's mini cycling.

mech and biomedia is all you need in a filter.

X2

If I dont get the BB in a bottle, should I just keep doing 30% water changes daily until its back to normal, or just let it fix itself..

ok, thanks
thats what I thought but just wanted to double check..

One question. If you change alot of water, then there will be small amounts of waste for the bacteria to live on. If they dont have enough, they wont multiply right? So in a phase like this, would it be better to not do to many waterchanges?

I though better check your tap water and before water change throw beneficial bacteria into the tank. help to more bacteria.

Make sure tap water has no chlorine and chloramine. if there is bad bacteria into the tank. :nilly:
