Nitrites!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I personally would replace the ammonia reducers for more bio media and also increase the % of the weekly water change.
+1

Do what tlindsey suggested. Then get a bottle of tetra safestart. You'll be fully cycled (if you follow the directions correctly) in less than a week

You say your tank has been cycling for one month, to me that means its still in the nitrite part of the cycle, so not yet fully cycled. Your high nitrites reflect this, as it sometimes takes 2 months for a tank to fully cycle.
And as others have said, by removing the "bio-bags" you are weakening and lengthening the time it takes to cycle. Your biobags are trying to grow a large population of ammonia and nitrite consuming bacteria, so each time you remove them, you are reducing that needed population.
And also agree with Tom's suggestions.

The ammonia reducers are the smaller pads right behind where the water flows out. They have bio media I can buy instead of those

Just curious assuming ammonia is 0, what's your nitrate level?

When cycling from scratch, I found frequent water testing to catch the key readings when they hit the cycled point. That is, did ammonia and/or nitrite spike then back down to 0? If so, what were your nitrate readings?

Aside from the good info others provided, trying to if there is evidence that your tank cycled.

So hey guys. I'm having a bit of an issue here in my 55 gallon. It's been cycling for a month and has been up and running for quite some time. Ive noticed of late I'm having nitrite spikes nothing severe yet. But what should I do to lower it and keep it 0. I do weekly 25 percent changes along with gravel vacs. Also have ammonia reducers in both filters..Please help. I cant loose my green terror or palmas (2) fish are friends not food

Your tank is not cycled. Did you attempt a fishless cycle or has your fish been in the tank since day one? BTW, I just finished a fishless cycle and it took 8 weeks to the day.
