NLS Question Thera vs. Med

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I did order it off Ebay but my fish seem to love it, except my GT... Blarg!

But I love NLS in general. I have the cichlid formula and my texas has colored up so much since I got him! When I read the ingredients I feel like it would be beneficial if I ate it, its got everything in it. My fish eat better than I do... I'm sure most MFK'ers fish do :]

It's not that I don't believe you Modest, I do, but you must have some very picky eaters.

When ever I change up fish food which I mostly just feed NLS and Hikari. I just do the starve trick and eventually they learn, especially if other fish are eating it around them. So I figure my Gt will go for it just because shes a greedy little b*tch. Works everytime. When I first got her she wouldn't eat anything but worms but I put her with my baby jag and when she saw him eating everything and loving it she eventually figured it out :]

I can post video if you want. As it sinks they suck it up and spit it out. It then deteriorates in the rocks.

The crayfish love it though.

Kind of a bummer to finally order this food (off eBay no less) as no one local sells it and then not have the fish eat it.
I experienced the same thing. My fish will not eat NLS 2mm even after starving them. When fish don't eat this stuff people act like the fish are weird or have some kind of problems. My fish eat a variety of other foods, they just don't like NLS. I may try a different size pellet to see if that works in a few weeks but I doubt it will.

You both realize you should have bought from us. It's a lot cheaper. LOL

Anywho, give them some time, they will start eating it.

Yes, I must admit that after training several hundred fish over the years, including scores of different species, many wild caught specimens, to eat NLS, I do personally find it odd when someone can't train a cichlid (or otherwise) to eat this food.

Step 1. - withhold all other food

For myself, that covers 99% of the training that's typically required.
I've yet to see a freshwater fish starve itself to death when food is available. The key is being more stubborn than the fish.

Seriously, other than Scleropages formosus, I have yet to run across a freshwater fish that I couldn't train to eat pellet food, of any brand.
All you need is some dedication, and patience.

These are the exact words of the all wise Pablo. Did all of that and the fish don't want it. Out of hundreds or possibly millions of captive and live fish, my cichlids don't like NLS. I have done the starve technique with other brands with great success, just not the case with NLS. I have more patience for the hobby itself and I'm more dedicated to my fish than to this one uneaten brand. It's really not a big deal. This is just my experience with this brand.

I've only had one fish that didn't like NLS and that was my Dovii. He was bonkers over Massivore pellets. After starving him he would eat the NLS 7.5mm but he never was crazy for it like he was for Massivore. All my other fish chow down on NLS. I throw in three different sizes all at the same time and the feeding frenzy is on.

My Grammodes, Midas, and Econdido wouldn't eat NLS. They would put it in there mouths and spit it back out, hmmm...
