No carbon in an AC110

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So what do you put in the ac110 instead of carbon. Do you add more biomax or just keep it the way it comes minus the carbon?

More biomax, scrubbies, purigen, etc. Cram it full

No carbon here as well.

Actually when i went to buy the AC 110 i brought a printed out version from Petsmart's website and they price matched. Sales lady even said extra biomax they'll price match. I was like what then she pointed it out on the printout lol.

2 bags of biomax and the sponge should easily fit.

I don't use carbon either, but if your tank starts to smell, for some reason, it would be good to add the carbon back for a while until the smell goes away.

I also don't use carbon in mine. I add a second sponge and cut it to fit as if it were a carbon pack and then the Bio-max on top.

If the tank begins to smell, I do a water change.

So do you ever clean anything in the filter?

What do you mean? I rinse out the media and sponges in old tank water in a bucket during wc. Occasionally rinse out the motor and impeller, also with old tank water.

Im a bit nervous taking my carbon out. I dont know how many threads of dead fish where the person didnt have an explanation about the fish death. Recently some guy had a full tank failure and loss everything. Everything was right in the tank (Water Parameters, temp etc), and still couldnt figure it out. I was thought his water became contaminated somehow. Its always possible somethng could get in your water, from the tap, from something on your hand, or something else accidently. So I dont know, I'll keep my carbon in for safety. I think alot of these unexplained deaths happened because no carbon was in the tank. I know some people dont use it and are careful, but the chance is always there.

Honestly I'm a bit confused by the ac110 filters. Usually sponges and biomedia are used to form bacteria colonies. In a wet dry you don't clean the bioballs or sponge. I was thinking the ac110 would be similiar. I'm guessing that the sponge is what catches the debris in these filters. How often do you change out the biomedia in these filters?
