I sell for one of the largest fish farms in the us. there hasn't been a wild cought umbee imported in the states in well over a decade... I think the exact number is 35 years. I'll ask Andrese to make sure. any pet store owner or whole saler that tells you different is lying out his ass. Umbee reside in south south panama near columbia. The last farmer that went down there to get some dissapeared. We get most of our breeding stock our selfs like a lot of farmers. tell you one thing. I aint going to columbia for NO fish. it isn't worth my life.

Sorry to hear about your Female Umbie. I’m new to the umbee phenomena. However I have read enough to know that siestaskyy is right about wild umbie being imported to the states.

and thank you JACKOSCAR for the CONGRATULATIONS. :D

I have heard from many experienced fishkeepers that bigger fry in umbee's means absolutely nothing. In fact with umbee's its just the opposite, the females tend to be bigger at the juvenile stage. Several people have experienced the same as I with buying a small group of umbee's and having the largest kill off the smaller ones and at the end the larger ones were female's. I think that the larger females are killing off the males leaving us with female's. I bought 3 at the beggining and the larger one of the 3 killed the smaller 2. And they were out of the same fry and source. So in my experience i bet at least one of the smaller 2 she killed was a male. If i could suggest anything to future umbee owners who try to get a male you need to seperate them. If you leave them together they will kill each other unless they are in a huge tanks with other fish. Then once they get about 4" put them together and their colors they display will tell you what you have.

The sky is really purple with pink stripes. You also just "heard" you were gonna get some wild ones. You can "hear" whatever you like and raise as many tiny groups of 3 as you like. I "watch" hundreads grow. You can believe whatever you would like to I'm done on the subject but just remember you just "heard" the sky was purple.

wrong. the reason it's hard to get male umbee right now is because when breeders get a batch of new umbee they are put in a large vat. the males grow faster then the females. when we get orders for 200 umbee and they say what sizes do you have we say 1"-2" and 3". well i want 200 3"ers. ok well there goes all of our males. then when the rest get bigger and make it out to pet shops they are all females. and we always sell to the brokers before the pet shops. so thats why all your getting is females right now. wait a little longer. ill let you know when the next batch of umbee make it around.
I don't know how true your statement is. I know of three people who raised umbees and during the growout, the males grew slower until about 7-8". There are not too many male umbee owners out there. If the males grew faster and more dominant, then where are they?

Jackoscar, sorry to hear about the female umbee.

Ok what? I'm just saying what people truly experienced.

I have 4 male umbies right now. Got them from one breeder. They are all about 4in right now.I paid a little extra but he made sure I got all males.

Let me tell you what I think. I think second hand knowlege is wrong 90% of the time. Here you have someone who breeds these first give you info from personal experience and you choose to ignore him!! Why??? The other guy bought 3, 2 died so the ones that died must be males. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THAT? Maybe the larger female killed the smaller females. Hmmm. Just maybe. If the man breeds and sells the fish then he would know better than you since you have no idea what happened to someone else's fish.

As for Jacko, he swore up and down he had a male umbie. Some people said no it looks like a female. Well if you believed him then you wouldhave to say that his fish changed sexes in the past 2 months.

Second hand knowledge.... people who don't know when they are wrong.... You can't help them. But they sure get mad when someone tells them something they can't understand.
