i crown you with the quote of the day sir

SiestaSky "wtf does that mean.............."Also i won't get angry because someone said i had my head up my ass because i experienced something with umbee's that a large majority of others did in the same way but lets all listen to the breeder and suck on his dick for awhile. Personally i'm kinda glad my umbee turned out female cause i like my new 180 set-up anyways........(Jardini Arowana, Ornate Bichir,Red Devil, (2) Monoculus Peacock Bass, Marble Pim Catfish).... For all those that take the journey in trying to get the infamous male umbee "GoodLuck to You"'.......Its a long road that has come up short for most of us. I just hope that this new craze doesn't influence too many people with small budgets into buying umbee's. These fish are truely beast and need at least a 240 to themselves when full grown.

Let me tell you what I think. I think second hand knowlege is wrong 90% of the time. Here you have someone who breeds these first give you info from personal experience and you choose to ignore him!! Why??? The other guy bought 3, 2 died so the ones that died must be males. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THAT? Maybe the larger female killed the smaller females. Hmmm. Just maybe. If the man breeds and sells the fish then he would know better than you since you have no idea what happened to someone else's fish.

As for Jacko, he swore up and down he had a male umbie. Some people said no it looks like a female. Well if you believed him then you wouldhave to say that his fish changed sexes in the past 2 months.

Second hand knowledge.... people who don't know when they are wrong.... You can't help them. But they sure get mad when someone tells them something they can't understand.

Haven't been here in awhile, I wonder why. Actually the experiences I have stated came from a breeder. I don't know the point of this statement. We are here to share valuable experiences, why if your knowledge gained is 90% wrong, I would choose the source more carefully.

I just want to reiterate that second hand knowledge is wrong 90% of the time, not first hand experience. I ignore second hand accounts.

"JACKOSCAR" means well but had bad info on his umbee's (was told he had males). "SiestaSkyy" tried to help him understand he had females and then got flamed for it. "JACKOSTAR" attacked him when he was only trying to help them out. No apology has been given that I know of.

Hey "JACKOSCAR" I'm glad you are happier with your new setup. It sounds like a pretty cool mix.

PS: The major issue/flaming started in another thread.

Just my opinion(s), but:

1. "second hand knowledge is wrong 90%" this really depends on where you're getting your information. This is a pretty blanketed statement...I'd take second hand knowledge from notable scientific experts anytime.

2. Male umbees will generally be larger than their female counterparts. This doesn't mean females will not be larger in some cases. This is true with many species of cichlids. I've bred alot of different cichlids, and within some groups, females grew larger and more dominant. Again, usually, the males are larger.

3. SiestaSkyy, you say before you can sell to the pet shops, "brokers" buy the bigger ones first. Can you tell me who these brokers are? Are you referring to large fish farms and/or wholesalers? If this is the case, then they in turn would sell to stores or other wholesalers/importers. Regardless of who gets these large quantities of the larger sized fish, they have to end up somewhere. So where are they? (I'm not trying to dispute your claims, I'm honestly just curious as to where these fish end up? If not local (US), are they being shipped internationally?)

The rise in umbee interest at this time has far surpassed the surge of interest a couple of years ago when they were popping up. I recall sending a bunch of 2 inchers and fry to the Michigan area at that time when I thought the umbee craze peaked.

I have kept, bred and raised umbees for years, and I never understand why there is so much controversy with them, particularly in the recent years. As far as the sexing of the umbee, if you are serious about keeping this fish, patience is key. Raise a few fish for a good year or two and you will find out if you have a male or female. If you don't want to "waste" your time raising an umbee, only to get a female, then you should re-think purchasing these beautiful fish in the first place.

My 2 cents.

Jeff Rapps has them available right now and the ones he's selling are 1.25-1.5" so there's no way he could know which ones are all males and have sold them already. why not order half a dozen or more from him and grow them up to get a male.

not sure I'd personally go so far as to say that though I can say I'd probably consider the 2 sources about equal. the key with either source type is figuring out which ones you can trust and which ones you can't. I've always tried to find as many opinions, both expert and hobbyist alike, and kind of figure out for myself what is reliable and what isn't. :)

I for one appreciate you sharing your experience with trying to find a male umbie. I know some people here get out of hand, but I think your experiences will help others in the hobby. Good luck with your set-up and continue to keep us posted.

I sell for one of the largest fish farms in the us. there hasn't been a wild cought umbee imported in the states in well over a decade... I think the exact number is 35 years. I'll ask Andrese to make sure. any pet store owner or whole saler that tells you different is lying out his ass. Umbee reside in south south panama near columbia. The last farmer that went down there to get some dissapeared. We get most of our breeding stock our selfs like a lot of farmers. tell you one thing. I aint going to columbia for NO fish. it isn't worth my life.
Here,here,i totaly agree!!!
