Just my opinion(s), but:

1. "second hand knowledge is wrong 90%" this really depends on where you're getting your information. This is a pretty blanketed statement...I'd take second hand knowledge from notable scientific experts anytime.

 How could an expert give you second hand kowledge? If they really are an expert (an umbee in this case) then they have conducted some type of test(s), experiment(s) and or observation(s) to qualify as such. Reading about a fish doesn't make you an expert. :grinno:

An expert arow keeper is not an expert in umbee's just because his best friend happens to be an umbee expert. However, if the arow guy asked his umbee friend a specific question about umbee's and posted the answer on his behalf I will take the opinion into consideration.

Any information you get outside of your own experience, whether it came from an expert or not, is considered "second hand knowledge." Yes, notable scientific authorities DO carry out tests, experiments, and observations.

Nobody said reading about a fish makes you an expert. You made that conclusion yourself.

Also, no one mentioned being an expert in one field makes you an expert in another field. Where in my post did I say that? How are you coming up with these scenarios?

The "second hand" comment was too general (you made that comment). The point I was making was that the information taken depends on your source. Would you take legal advice from someone that watches a tv show like Judge Judy, or would you listen to a qualified lawyer?

Second hand knowledge is the same as hearsay. I don't listen to it. It's worthless to me. If someone tells me they tied domething and got a certain result I respect their experience and info offered. What you said is just plain wrong. If you change your statement one more time you might get it right. But at what cost? Do you really want to impress me or anyone else for that matter? If so, why?

I doubt that emk has to impress you or anyone else. His input to this hobby is priceless. As far as second hand knowledge, how can it be hearsay? If an event happened with accurate, truthful results, you're not going to pay it no mind? So do you have to be an 'expert' for it to be valid? This is what forums are about - to exchange experiences. Your 90% theory is too funny.

fsc46,

1. I am not here to impress you or anyone else. Re-read my post. The very first thing I wrote was "just my opinion..."

2. You and I apparently have a different definition of "second hand knowledge." In my definition, second hand knowledge is any information from a source other than your own. This includes facts as well as opinions from experienced people.

What you seem to be referring to is "rumor," which is something different. Rumor is "talk or opinion widely disseminated WITH NO DISCERNIBLE SOURCE," or "a statement or report WITHOUT KNOWN AUTHORITY FOR ITS TRUTH."

3. I'm not here to argue with you or anyone else on such a pointless matter. Grow up and pick a fight with someone on your low level thinking. I'm done here.

Let me guess.... you guys are dating each other. Emk jumps in to save Roliva, and Roliva calls emk priceless even though you only have 3 posts at this point. lol. How much time do you spend saving each other?

Emk, you might be wise beyond your years when it comes to fish. Your input will be speak for its self. You really don't need a cheerleader screaming for you. :swear: Do you? :swear:

huh? ok guys I think I know what fsc was trying to say. "Doing your own research is the safest bet" However I do agree with emk. Second hand knowledge is knowledge pass on by a first hand source. You guys need to simmer down. We are all here to share and learn.
