I just moved my 100 gallon to my new house, and it seems my fx5 sucked up quite a bit of sand in the short amount of time when I was scooping it up and forgot to shut off the filter. I emptied the canister, took off the motor housing. Rinsed off the motor housing(the orange part that I unscrewed from the canister). Rinsed out the canister and the area the impeller housing attaches to & some sand came out. Maybe 1/2 a cup worth...put the filter back together and it still made the sound...it's not bubbles, because it doesn't sound like air. It's more of a sort of mechanical/grinding type sound.
Since I moved the tank yesterday the filter has been very noisy and the sound is coming from the motor/impeller housing, I think there must be sand in it. But how do I take it apart to clean it? I was looking at the orange area of the part I took off and saw that the "screws" weren't regular screws, they had 5? points, like a star.

Hellppp! I just want my awesome filter to be quiet again. Doesn't do much good to have a 100 gallon display tank if all people can focus on is your noisy filter :irked:

You have to pull the round black thing out. The impeller is in there. You don't need to remove the screws, it's held
In magnetically. Just pull it and clean.

Alright. Pulled it out and it was disgusting, I rinsed the impeller and the part the impeller goes in until they were both spotless. Plugged it back in with nervously shaking hands...and of course, my $250 filter is still so noisy that I can hear it from my bedroom. I'm starting to feel a bit hopeless now.

Will do. I'll update you in about 10 minutes - I'm taking it apart again just to make sure I properly lined up the arrows - only read in the manual that two arrows have to be lined up AFTER I had filled it up and started it again. Go figure lol!

Ah, I take it apart again only to find out that the only way the impeller assembly can go back together is if the arrows are lined up, so me taking it apart again was pointless. Letting it run for 10 minutes now and we'll see if it's still noisy after that.

Alright. I've let it run through the run-stop-run cycle, unplugged it and restarted the cycle 3 times and it still is as noisy as ever. It's definitely a mechanic, rattling/grinding type sound, not bubbles.
