Noisy FX5

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fluval is starting to make me mad. I contacted them because the filter is being REALLY noisy. Their response was:

"Any pads that you have inside the baskets need to be replaced approximately every 14 days, this is not the ones that go around the outside of the baskets.
The hoses are not going up straight, it will be necessary to move the hoses to the side, keep in mind it is very important to have the hoses straight up.
Also, be sure were the rubber hose and the intake stem connect that they are at least 2" below the water line.
The noisy is caused by air getting into the filter and all the above things can cause this to happen.
Once you take care of these issue you should not have any problem."

Then they marked my case as "solved"!!

1. I already told them I don't have any sponges or pads in the filter
2. The noise it's making is NOT air, it is mechanical and coming from the motor housing
3. The hoses don't go straight up but that should not cause the problem, I know tons of people who have kept their filters NEXT TO the tank and not under it(including myself at the old house) with zero issues. Mine won't fit under the tank without me having to pick up and move the 100 gallon every time I need to take it out, as it would have to be removed from the back.
And of course all my intakes are below the water line.

Pissing me off...I do not want to have to spend $100 on a $250 filter to replace something that should be covered by the warranty.

Just a suggestion, Sell the filter for cheap as a repair special to recover some funds, then get another one and be done with it.

Don't spend money to fix it. Buy an Eheim with the motor on top. They don't have this problem snd they are better filters. Get a classic that has no bells and whistles.

I don't have the money to buy a new filter. I am a student, I have $200 to my name and this is tied up in a new camera lens that I just bought. The reason I bought the filter with the warranty was so that if something like this ever happened they would fix it, not so that they could push me off to the side.

once its done lose the sand and go slate bottom!-) looking like you will need another filter if you send it off to fluval to be fixed anyways? i would just swallow the bill and order the new parts myself... jus have to deal with the noise till you can afford it, maybe you could put it in a cardboard box and wad it out to stop the noise in the mean time?

When you say use Silicone Grease, do you mean put it on the actual impeller? Will it harm the fish to have that get in the water?

Silicone Grease is aquarium safe, been using it for maintaining my filters. You basically just need to apply the grease to the spinning areas and parts of both the motor and impeller assembly.

And can you explain more what you mean in your last suggestion?

The last suggestion meant that try to pull out the hoses from the aquarium, to let them breathe. Sometimes, air build up within the hoses can cause difficulty for the motor to operate and cause noise when trying to circulate water between the canister and the tank.

If you've done that and the noise is still there, then we have to conclude that there is something wrong with the motor and impeller assembly.

I had the same issue with my FX5 when I gave it that good thorough once-in-a-great-while cleaning. I know the loud grinding/clicking noise and it's loud...not the kind of noise caused from bubbles. I took the impeller compartment off, played with the o ring and shaft at least a dozen times. I eventually got the loud noise to go away by leaving it running for a few days as replacing parts on this fairly new bad boy was not an option due to the $$. I hope you can get it squared away without buying replacement parts.

Not to be rude but why should fluval cover a mistake you made even if it is under warranty?

I dropped my phone and broke my screen but is LG going to replace it? Nope

You specifically admitted fault and said you were adding sand and forgot the filter was on...... would be one thing if it did malfunctioned without user error. I'm sure your not the 1st costumer they have had that have done this especially since the water doesn't siphon into the intake, it hits the motor 1st! Just have to keep that in mind when working in/on the tank.

How exactly did you explain what happened to fluval?
