get a high pressure hose and wash the holes out in the bottom of the tub... it only takes a tiny bit off sand .... mine was doing it on and off for months after i removed all my sand! then i washed the bottom out.

Sigh. Filter is still just as noisy this morning.

What tub? Do you mean wash out the canister part with a high pressure hose?

yes, there are little chambers in the bottom mate, i used a hose and attachment and was surprised how much was in there that i couldnt rinse out under the tap!-)

Same thing happened to me my fx5 sucked up sand I ended up replacing the entire impeller assembly, I tried just the impeller and the ceramic shaft did not work. They sell the assembly on amazon and ebay for about $70 this is the only thing that worked for me.

Where did you find it that cheap? The best price I can find is $99

You've jacked it! Running it thru the night wasn't smart but I guess if it was your only filter its understandable! I'm sure you can see obvious wear rings on the magnet and if the motor housing (where the magnet spins) isn't smooth and also roughed up you need a new motor assembly and impeller.

There's really nothing you can do now because the rattling indicates to much play between the motor housing and impeller and the impeller is off balance thus smacking the sides. I did the same to my ac110 cuz my power head fell off cuz it lost suction on its crappy mount and blasted sand right to the intake, cleaned it and I just have to plug it in a few times, give it a tap and eventually it restarts quiet but its not nearly as powerful as the fx5 unit.

Believe me you will never let that happen again! Sorry for you troubles!

Yeah, I just power sprayed it with the hose and it still makes the noise, it starts making the noise as soon as it's plugged in.
I guess it's a good thing that this filter, which I've had for a year, came with a 3 year warranty.

&Yep, this is my only filter for the tank. Well, I do have an AC110 but there is no way that thing could keep up with my stock.

+1, Definitely agree. If either the magnet or the spinning area within the motor is not smooth, you will need a complete motor and impeller assembly.

Assuming the impeller magnet and spinning area is still in good shape, you may want to try:

- Remove motor and impeller assembly, and leave these under water for an hour or two, then shake off to see if more sand comes off
- Buy Silicone Grease, and use all around impeller and motor assembly, o-rings/seals, and canister spinning area
- Clean canister walls, holes, slips, etc. (I use a small brush and toothpick to clean hard-to-clean areas)
- remove input/output hoses from water to avoid continuous siphon (maybe give both hoses a good clean as well), only to put back when filter is ready to run (fixed the loud noise on my fx5 when I had a noise issue)

If you've tried all of those and it's still making noise, then it's time to do some warranty work :D

Thank you! I've already contacted Fluval(did it yesterday) and heard back this morning, she just asked me several questions about the filter.
I will try your suggestions and hopefully I will end up not needing to get a new motor. I'm not going to get my hopes up though!

When you say use Silicone Grease, do you mean put it on the actual impeller? Will it harm the fish to have that get in the water?

And can you explain more what you mean in your last suggestion?
