I hear all the bashing of feeding gold fish, but I have to say that I have a Clown Knife that just turned 20. 20 years and he's been eating goldfish since he was big enough for them instead of guppies. He got ick right after I put him in the tank when I was 15 years old. That is the only disease he has ever had.

That being said, having owned a RTC in the past I would recommend getting him off the feeders as fast as possible. Too expensive for that voracious appetite. I fed mine everything. Bits of steak. Albacore tuna (packed in water not oil), feeders once in a while, cichlid sticks, whatever...And I could feed him that stuff from my hand. It was too cool...Closest thing to a puppy you will ever have in a tank unless of course you drain the tank and add a real puppy...
you either have Amazing luck or your quarentine process is perfected... either way good on ya for being that long without having any issues with feeders, Personally i love to give feeders... but I don't do it unless I'm 100% certian that there is no chance of illness as my Big Cats are my pride and joy so I wouldn't want to take even a 1 in a 100 chance that there is something wrong with their food...That said... thats why i've started to breed my own feeders. Much less likley to have issues since I can control the conditions. 95% of the food that I feed is frozen anyway and I don't plan on changing that anytime soon. I mean WHY RISK IT?

No quarantine whatsoever. Just drop them in the tank and watch him mow them down.

For his first year or so he was fed guppies as he was only about 2.5 inches when I got him. I put the guppies in a quarantine tank just so I didn't feed them all at once. Added a little java fern and got some babies to save me some $$$ on feeders. Then when he was eating waaayyyy too many guppies for a 16 YO to afford I switched to small GF. Been feeding him GF ever since...

What feeders are you breeding? I can get guppies like rabbits, but could never get goldfish to breed.

I've been doing Guppies (for the little guys) and platy's and swords for snacks and treats for the bigger ones ;)

Not trying to keep them as a full meal as I would need 100 tanks of these or would have to switch to something else like convicts(which are bone as hell when they get to a good feeder size for my cats... ie NOT Cool) Like I said I'm still and always will be 95% frozen food for my carnivores... less chance of an issue, who really wants to lose a fish after 10 years because you took the risk of feeding some dirty feeders right?

Theres a sticky in the general disc area on feeders and feeding goldfish. Something to do with their hormones isnt good apparently... Basslover, you think cons are bad for TSN?

Generally they are a VERY bony fish and their dorsal fin gets to be like a needle... it can do alot of damage when a larger fish tries to eat it... I know some people have had alot of success with using them but I've also heard some horror stories as well... I personally wouldn't want to use them as feeders unless they are really small (ie soft)

i know its late, but welcome to MFK and thats a beauty RTC, ive seen full grown RTC kept with full grown japanese koi before i think on youtube?

but anyways, i know in the philips where you are, feeders are dirt cheap, but like what has been said, its best NOT to feed as of parasites and teh likes of which can destroy your treasured fish.. i find market deshelled shrimp brought out amazing colour on my RTC amongst a vacried and balanced diet of course :) good luck!

Well everyone my RTC is on a shrimp diet, unless it likes to catch the 3 remaining GF thats remaing in the pond.

But yeah she digs the shrimp.... a lot!!!:)
