i have heard pool filter sand (silica) isnt good for rays because of its sharp edges.

im wondering what sand i can put in with the ray im getting to make sure it doesnt injure itself.

will play sand work? i seen some today for only $4 a bag but wanted to make sure first because it says on the bag once its wet it packs really tight and its good for bulding sand castles. will this have the same result under water? or will the ray be able to dig and hide under it?

i want a sand thats more natural looking coloured and im not a fan of tahitan mood sand. is there an easy way about this sand business or am i going to have to pay alot more money to buy some sand from the LFS.

i already have white pool filter sand in the tank the ray(s) are going in

as for the rays they are retics and are selling for $69.99 CDN i would like to get a male and female to grow out and then upgrade tank or build a stingray suited type of tank.

thank you sooooooooooo much for any input :)

Dan

It really depends on the brand and type.

I use pool filter sand for all of my rays and I have never had any problems. However, my sand is 100% quartz.

thanks for the info. i will look at the pool supply store for some quartz sand. i love your ray tank btw!!!!

i understand retics are a very hard beginner ray but i have no others to buy and i dont mind a challenge. ya gotta learn somehow and if you dont challenge yourself you will never learn.

plus i have tons of experienced people here on the site obviously that i can get help from if needed.

thanks :)

yes you do haha how big is your tank?

I think Retics actually are a good beginner ray. For most people retics are all you can get at a good price. For example, around here retics will cost you about $40. That is is less then half the price of a motoro. If you dont have a fortune to spend and realize that you may loose a ray or two (still under the price of a single motoro) you really cant go wrong for getting into keeping rays. Once you can comfortably keep retics it is safe to spend money on a more expensive ray.

right now they will go into a 75 gallon tank.

any more input on sand? is playsand ok or is it sharp like silica? also will playsand pack too tightly when wet and not allow the rays to burry themselves?

i just bought a bag of playsand for $3.19 and it looks to be pretty fine sand. much finer then my pool filter sand(silica)

i will test of how much it packs when i am cleaning the sand before i add it to the tank. i hope this will work good enough and not hurt the rays.

i will still take an suggestions people may have to offer. i am very knowledgable about piranha's but stinyrays are like a totally different language so far for me.

thanks everyone
Dan

Just be careful with it.

Fine sand can ruin filter impellers and some sands can greatly affect the Ph of your system.

Colin
this would be my only worry. a 75 should last you a good while if its a small ray eventually a rectic will need a 3 feet wide tank tho

yeah i will take one of the aqua clear extension tubes off the filter so its not down close to the sand.

i have sand in a few of my other tanks so i know what ya mean about the impellers.

just so you guys know im not a complete noob of keeping fish just rays. ive got 6 tanks running currently and i wanted to convert one to something really neat and something not seen very often in my area. most people keep cichlids and community fish so i like to be different so i wanted a ray or 2

thansk for the advice guys

i will keep an eye on the PH, thanks colin
