Noob Shark Pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I did research, most people who have shark ponds use bio filters,$300, I found the same pool at $75. 140lb of live sand runs at my local aquarium store for $91; I think that's enough for it. Live rock is going to run me a $200 estimate and with xdragon's idea regular rock will run me $50. Also for the water I'll buy 4 32 gallon trashcans,$56, and in about 15 trips I'll have it filled. For a cover it'll take $30. So the total amount is $802, with the shark its $872. Anything else I need?

experience.
i dont mean to be rude but have you really thought this through? i mean,
what's a "biofilter"?
you plan to use seawater from the beach around the corner from you?
where are your pumps, and the rest of the filtration?
the best advice i can give you is, start a thread/read around in the shark/ray section, learn what these sharks need and how to provide it. THEN make a thread about possibly DIY-ing your shark system.

I like this post right here.

Those guys in the shark section really know their stuff. They will tell you just what you need to get by and can get you a successful shark pond

Why are people encouraging this? If you haven't kept a shark then you have no business in this thread giving "advice". The bio-load a shark produces is tremendous. To keep the shark happy and healthy, scratch that, ALIVE AT ALL you will need a protein skimmer. A tank that size you are looking at a multiple thousand dollar DELTEC, RK2, etc setup. That is just for the skimmer. You'll also need a heater/chiller unit, that will run you $1500~. You'll need some kind of custom over flow feeding into a sump (Acrylic $1500? Rigged? $100) and pumps powerful enough to at least turn your water over six times per hour, better ten times per hour. Oh and your pump(s) and skimmer will likely be 230v, pump(s) could vary well be 3 phase. Even if both are 1 phase you'll want both of them on their own circuits. That kind of electrical work you can't ghetto rig and will need to hire a professional to do.

I don't blame you for how misguided your endeavor is as you said you were new to the hobby. That said, anyone who is trying to help you, who has run _any_ kind marine tank before, is a moron.
