i just found this thing on craigs list and im trying to figure out how to get the filtering right.

I've heard people on the board mentioning the fx5. The specs make it look like i could just run one of those for the whole tank.

will one be enough for mech and bio filtering?

it seems like a lot of ppl use w/d for bio, but w/d also seems like a hassle. any reason not to just do everything in a can filter or two?

thanks for any help

It depends on the bio-load. 2 FX5's on a 300 would work great though. A friend of mine has 2 on a 500 and the water always looks great!

If you decide to do canisters or HOB's it is wise to have more than one filtration device. i say this because if something was to happen to your canister like a bad seal or something and you had to order a part to fix it your tank would be in danger of crashing. But if you have more than one filter it is not as big of a deal. If it were me i would do 2 fx5's and 2 ac110's. I do not like the hassle of a sump etheir. But I do like alot of filtration. That set up would give you roughly a 8x turn over rate with the filters loaded with media. I think that would make a great set-up.

Whoa thats overdoing it. I think (2) Fx5s is sufficient. A sump and an Fx5 or a sump and something else would be good too. But if a sump is somehing you dont wanna hassle, then I'd do two Fx5s.

Its all up to the user but in a recent poll here on MFK most users here try for a turn over rate of 10x an hour. I do as well. In the poll I think it was 10-11x an hour was first and 7-9 was second. Thats in turn over rate an hour with a HOB filter.

I agree with hybrid in having a backup, but I agree with pyramid in that 2 FX5s is a bit much. I'd go with a FX5 and 2 AC110s.

What are you going to stock the tank with?
i would go with 2xFX5

well im not sure what i want to put in it yet. Im thinking 1 arowana and 1 tiger oscar, 2 or 3 fire mouths and maybe a pleco or some other cool bottom feeder

zen, its not drilled and its glass.
