Noob with new 180g - what to stock?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I say go for the geophagus, you could keep a mix of them like the orange heads, altifrons, juripari/leuco, A. heckelii, etc. Some loaches would be sweet, or some smaller south american catfish if you want to stick to fish from the same area, driftwood, fancy plecs, etc. Perfect!!

Disregard the last post mate just found the painfully obvious Conversions section.. :grinno:

haha, sorry I was in the middle of making my post when you put that one up :D

But yeah, we've all done that. Were but humble fish keepers, we no likey math !

Thanks for the input so far guys. Not sure I'll be able to sell the boss on a 1 fish tank. Won't a Dovii get too big for a 180g?

I was thinking I could fit 8-10 x ~12" fish in a tank this size. Is that in the ball park or am I on crack?

Cheers :)

Thats pretty overstocked in my person opinion, I prefer to understock my aquariums.

A Dovii would take an extremely long time to get too big for a 180g, but id prefer giving a Dovii something with a 30-36" width.

Hrmm... Well, it may only be one fish, but something that large and colorful is a centerpiece. Why buy 50 paintings at a yard sale if you can get a Picasso instead ? :)

But if there must be multiple fish, you could look into a Front colony.

Maybe a pair might be what you're looking for ?

Thanks for the stocking rate advice Rakie. As I said I am a noob! The largest fish I've kept prior to this is a 9" bala shark. I would prefer not to have to worry about a short power outage or similar doing in the fish.

Are you really saying that you an only keep a couple of 12" fish in a 180g though...?

Well you CAN keep more, but personally I like to give my fish more room. But thats a personal thing.

Id say the average guy could put maybe 4-5 cichlids in there with not too many problems, but not too many cichlids are 12"... They either stay smaller or get bigger then that, 14" seems to be the average full grown size of a LOT of species.

That in mind, id look into 4-5 fish.

Or, a colony of Fronts, could be really cool.

by "boss" you mean your woman? if so show her videos of an arowana. my woman fell in love with "how pretty they are when they swim" lol.

btw. i vote jag pair!

There is a couple of local guys that breed 7 bar fronties and sell the fry at a fair price. I didn't really want to do Africans though :(

Maybe this is why I never did cichlids before lol! So if I went with a GT what would be OK tankmates sticking toi the 4-5 fish...

Cheers

Aro is out. To spendy for my tastes. I would want to have a bit more large fish keepng experience up my sleeve :P

No, it doesn't have to be fish like a GT, just do some searches and when you find some fish you like, put it up here and ask us what we think.
