Noob with new 180g - what to stock?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm getting a 300 this weekend (2' longer than your 180) and will be doing a community SA/CA tank, here's my partial stock list so far:

Herichthys Carpintis
Parachromis Motaguense
Nandopsis tetracanthus
Parachromis Loisellei
Parachromis Friedrichsthalii
Crencicihla Lacustris
Crencicihla sp. Cobra

Do what I did go here: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/
and browse through the profiles and see what fish you like, the profiles have max size and pictures as well as other information about the fish.

That setup should be very entertaining.

Well, way, way back in the day, my uncle kept a very mixed 100g tank..

African Lungfish
Red Tail Catfish
Stone Fish
Jag Cichlid
Silver Arowana
Several Plecos (none were common but I forgot which ones)

And at least one more cichlid..

These fish were VERY well taken care of, and the RTC / Lungfish / Arowana were all donated to the LA Natural History Museum when they got too large.

The Museum killed all of them due to poor care... He had these back in the mid 80's when 100g were pretty large and you couldn't find much bigger in a store you'd have to custom order.

All these fish got along fine, as long as he didn't put in something small enough to fit in something elses mouth.

Im not suggesting you build a completely random "impulse buy" tank like that haha, but it gives you an idea of what is possible.

If you want a group of active colourful medium sized cichlids then the geophagus are the way to go.

Japes, back me up here!!

Hiya - Can you give a suggested stocking if I go with the Geo's? What if I want to go to a larger geo like the altifrons?

Cheers :)

OK here's a tentative for stocking with a GT. Be gentle...

1 x GT
1 x Texas Cichlid
4 x Convict (same sex?)

Other thought is to drop the texas and go 2 x GT

Thoughts most appreciated thx :)
