Noob with new 180g - what to stock?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
in that stock id go with the following,
Male Gold Saum
Male EBJD
Male RTM
Male Friedrichsthali
Male Grammodes
some dithers of your choice.

personally i'd go an all male tank

1 Jack Dempsey
1 Cuban
1 Green Terror
1 Jaguar
1 Texas
1 Firemouth

sure the tank may look a little empty for a while but growing cichlids up yourself is half then fun. non of the above are OVERLY aggressive. obviously there will still be a 'king of the tank' but they can all handle themselves. and as stated previously you can always thin out numbers as they get bigger. still go with your 'dither' fish idea though

let us know how you go

Yep I definitely want to grow the fish up myself. That is the part of the hobby I enjoy the most. I find breeding a bit too stressful as I feel terrible if the fry start carking it. Maybe I need to harden up, lol!

Thanks for the extra stocking sugesstions there guys. Can I have RTM spelled out for me I'm unfamiliar with that contraction.

Cheers :)

Hi Cuban,

I see you are in Perth too :)

I can get the fish on my stock list so far right?
GT, Jag, Texas, cons/firemouth...

I'm pretty sure I've seen those fish around the place...

Bocourti, Pearsii, Red bay snook and maybe a vieja species

maybe try throwing in some smaller guys like Hondurans redpoints, myrnae's convicts, spirilum etc

Well I'm progressing closer with the hardware. After sanding and staining and sanding and varnishing and sanding etc ad nauseum :nilly: for the weekend...

I got my substrate sorted out but I have all the washing ahead of me and the varnishing of the hood to go. I never did any furniture finishing before so I'm pretty stoked with the outcome so far!

I've got a 3-d background lined up so I'm just on the hunt for some nice driftwood and plastic plants to sort the aquascaping.

Finally progressed to being able to leak test the tank. Plus all my mates are wising up to the likelihood of heavy lifting when they come around:ROFL: Should have it fully filled and tested for leaks by tomorrow night so I will siphon the tank empty and install the back-ground this weekend. Once the background silicon has cured the substrate will go in and then it is filling and starting the cycle.

Stock is back up in the air as the wife is starting to beat the drum for geos.

So here we go with the tank in place and the first partial fill underway:
